Will upgrading the audio decrease resale value?

Just got an ORP. It's sweet, but I'd love to upgrade the audio. Two questions:
1) Recommendations for equipment?
2) Will doing so decrease the resale value?

For trade in value, it will either have no impact or could have slightly negative impact as they may feel the need to revert it back to stock before selling. For private party... some will see it as a selling point, so while it might not help with value, it might help seal the deal.

Either way, you're best bet might be to hold on to the stock gear, and revert everything back when it comes time to sell.

For recommendations - depends a lot on budget and what you'd like yo get out of your system. Are you looking to just swap some speakers, looking to replace the headunit, looking to add amp and sub?

 

Just like any mod don't expect to get your money back and you will be fine.

If you just do speakers, no one would be the wiser. I guess a salesperson could recognize it sounds better, and say dam that sounds good, let’s take 500 off your trade value.

 

1) upgrading the speakers will make a big difference as the stock ones are pathetic. I went with the OEM Audio + and am very happy with the kit as its plug and play and comes with an amp and speakers.

2) won't affect resale value, but will make the vehicle more appealing to buyers in a private market however vs a similar optioned one without the upgraded components.

 

If its well done it shouldn't decrease value, but don't expect that you'll get all your money back. If the upgrade is poorly executed then it will decrease value, my 4runner should be an example of that. The previous owner who upgraded it did it cheaply, they ruined the grommet on the fire wall and sealed it up using caulking, they laid miles of unlabeled wires, they broke the door sill trim because they forced it back in instead of taking the time to realize that the wires were preventing it from snapping back in, it has been a nightmare to correct.
