Why no love for tan interiors?

Is it just me, or are vehicle manufacturers against tan interiors?

You can't get tan interior on a 4Runner unless it's an SR5 or a limited.

When I was looking for a Ford truck a couple years ago, I had to get one from California because there wasn't 1 with tan interior in AZ.

For grins, I was perusing the Ford Partner website yesterday. (you can see what is in dealers' inventory). There are exactly 6 new Super Duty 4x4 trucks in Arizona with tan interior. 6 out of literally hundreds of trucks!

When I ordered my Tundra in 2016, I ordered it with tan interior. 75% of the interior is still black.

I know I'm probably in the minority on this, but I don't care for gray interior and black is even worse - it gets too damn hot in the sun.

Anyone here have any inside scoop to this?

Because thats how much less tan interior vehicles sell than black.

    Black hides dirt.

And you guys should be happy to have Super Duty's available. I've been looking for one for months from someone thats not going to try rip me off.

I disagree. At least the kind of dirt I get. The black interior of my first 4Runner showed every speck of dust, dog hair, and dry skin. Now it did hide blue Jean dye better than the tan of my second one, but that’s about it.

Tan is a great interior color. Had a 1993 Camry and 2001 4Runner, both gold with tan interiors. They hide dirt because most dirt is brownish. And it’s a relaxing color. And dropped items are easier to find.

Tan interiors remind me of baby poo. Maybe they remind other people of baby poo. Maybe auto makers try to avoid stuff that reminds people of baby poo.

Then again, BMW made the i3. That thing looks like poo.

I had a 2000 Buick Regal in tan interior. Hideous to say the least.

I almost bought a used 4Runner with tan interior but the deal didn't work out.

I actually like tan interiors if it's a lighter, natural looking tan.

The 4Runner tan interiors look slightly off to me. A little too yellow? Too dark? Can't quite put my finger on it.

I love tan interior. My SR5 got tan interior with cloth seats. Great in hot summer days. Sadly they are not kids friendly.

Funny because on third gens the tan interior was super popular while the grey interior got discontinued after 2000

Had a Blazer that I kept for 15 years with just a little tan in the interior...thought it was great at the time but looking back

The real question is what happened to velour interiors and cloth seats with cool patterns?

    Interesting responses.

Apparently, if I'm not over 75, I shouldn't desire tan? I should desire black or gray interior when it's 120 outside? I'm just trying to understand what's expected of me. ;-)

J/K.....I hate gray and black interiors and always have. They remind me of the old movie 1984...very gloomy.

There's more to this. My guess is there's some consulting company with a person in charge of the the vehicle color interior consulting who thinks black and grey are what people want.

Or, I could be wrong. ;-)

Im with you! And Im not quite over the hill yet. Id take it a step further and say I wouldn't mind a bit if they'd start putting a little color or pattern in car interiors again. Or the kind of nice cloth they put in Toyotas and Hondas of the late 80s/early 90s. Saw a Volvo recently that had a multi-colored plaid on the center of the seats, and thought it was awesome.

I like tan as well but I think I will end up with black for some time -- anyone have insights on the best way to even get an ORP?

Dust, Dog Hair, Dry Skin is not dirt.

Light interiors that are not cleaned will turn black no matter how clean you think you are. Gotta realize more than half the car owners out there don't give a shit about cleaning like most of us do.

But they are all much more common than dirt. I currently have three cars with tan interiors--Softex, cloth and leather. They show no black dirt.

Not getting the point that black = less maintenance. Your "common" stuff can be wiped on in seconds which some might do. Scrub/condition seats, arm rests, etc most won't.

I have 2 cars with black interiors and I completely disagree. The only time my carpet looks decent is right after I vacuum. Dark gray hides dirt much better.

Lol! I'm good with tan. And, I'm only 42.

Not sure what state you're in, but I recently called 2 guys here in AZ at different Toyota dealerships, both of whom were able to tell me what 4Runners were coming into the state in the next several weeks. I could have put my name on anything not already spoken for. Unfortunately, I wanted something very specific and the 2 units that fit my wants were both spoken for. (ORP in Lunar Rock w/KDSS & sunroof).....and, the lovely black softex interior, of course. ;-) Did that sound sarcastic?

Being serious, I've seen a few great tan interiors. When they're on the warm and a bit brown side, like a high quality leather briefcase, they might be the swankiest of all interiors. I've seen some like that on Miatas and high-end sports cars and GTs. When matched with a good blue or British Racing Green exterior, it's really hard to beat IMO.

But the tan I usually see -- and certainly this is the case on the 4Runner -- screams cost cutting, cheapness and poor taste. The cheapness of many plastics on the dash and door panels is much more obvious in a lighter color. Scuffs and dinginess show up quickly. And since most auto makers don't spec high quality leathers on the seats, that same sense of cheapness carries over. As @nimby said above, there's something about the tone of most tan interiors that just doesn't work.

So... I think the problem isn't tan per se, it's the failure of most auto makers to do it well.

    Thx!

They could see anything that was scheduled to be delivered in the "region," which included California. I'm assuming the scheduled thing meant it was off the boat and on US soil? They did mention that the deliveries were several weeks out. IDK? One mentioned that his GM tagged the vehicle I wanted for his personal use.

It was a blessing in disguise. I don't really need it until next fall, I just have the wants now. :D

AAAHHHHH - the old 'region' ploy....
No I can see that, I need to look up what region Colorado is in- I'm in Kansas but will go about anywhere to find one (short list of must haves) I heard a guy refer to the 4R as the Colorado State Car so the chances of getting one from there is better - I think.
