Me personally will buy lower trims due to me already knowing what mods i will spend $$ on anyways. But that's not everyone. Some just want it there already.

Same reason auto mechanic shops are lucrative, not everyone has the time, tools, space, or wanting to learn how to fix an issue.

    Is personal situations and preference.

My buddy has a rubicon recon with a lift and tires, he paid $45,000 for a 2017 2 owner vehicle with 21,000 miles on it. I wonder why the first 2 people ditched it so fast but I can say he uses that thing for it’s intended purposes. Lots of fun but I could never do what he does to a $45,000 daily driver. The solid axles, lockers, and sway bar disconnects & 4.10 gears from factory is something a top of the line 4 runner should have as well in my eyes. No need for that on pavement though.

Its the beginning of what many saw coming.

Inflation + variable APR loans + rising gas prices + big dollars over MSRP = People who cant afford their vehicle anymore.

Now imagine you are a 25yo guy, have a decent job, live in a major city, and commute 70+/- miles to work every day. Rent, student loans, daily COL. You can "afford" to buy a new TRD Pro. MSRP for argument sake is $65k becasue the dealer can. No one has them in stock. You take out a variable APR loan, because in 2021, money was still cheap at a Prime of 3.25%. You get in at 4.9%, not a bad monthly payment with 20% down. Now that the Prime is 6.25% that variable rate got real expensive, real quick. For a lot of people, it added 20-45% increase in their monthly payment. Add in the cost of fuel at ~18mpg x 70 miles RT @ $4.50 a gallon = $500+ in fuel.

    Payment was - $600+/-
    Now is - $900+/-
    Fuel was - $220+/-
    Fuel now - $500+/-

Insurance also tacked on in most states a surcharge. Add on another 4-6% increase.

They can't afford something they spent WAY to much money on up front, and when the economy took a shit, they traded them in for something lower end and way better gas prices. Same goes for the RV/trailer market. Last summer you couldn't find an overland trailer within 8 hours of my house. Now there are 14 on Facebook within 8 miles. More to come this winter when people are trying to figure out how to pay their bills.

Remember your over MSRP dealer when they call you asking if you have seen their below MSRP deals on new cars when the economy gets worse in Jan/Feb. Tell them to pound sand.

I got my '22 Pro for MSRP. Otherwise, I would not have touched it. The majority of the options it comes with were options I was looking for on the ORP that I originally started searching for. Not gonna be a guy who lifts or tries to run huge tires. Wanted a 4-Runner for it's reliability and capability in stock-form. Did I pay more than I wanted to? Not really, if I was going to add on to the ORP/SR5 all the other stuff I wanted, that came stock with the Pro. Only option I would have decided NOT to do, had I bought a lower trim model, is the JBL stereo system and was looking for a different color than I ended up with. I have added Rock sliders, some cosmetic stuff, and that's it.

So I have a stock vehicle - no danger of the warranty being denied (I have a coworker and friend who has a SR5 with a lift and he's CONSTANTLY fighting Toyota on the warranty issue), with much higher resale value, I got it for MSRP, it's outfitted exactly as I wanted it. Got a fantastic amount for my trade-in, to boot. My seats heat up, I can start it on cold mornings from my Cell Phone or my key fob from inside my warm house, I have the 360 Camera, and actual Manual stick for the transfer case, dual climate control (so my girlfriend can stay warm without running my out of my own vehicle with heat), etc, etc... I even like the roof rack (I know, I'm weird like that).

Do I "NEED" a Pro? Absolutely not. But I doubt any of us "NEED" a 4Runner, either. But aside from the color and the stereo, I'm glad this MSRP 2022 Pro fell into my lap. I like it. That's all that matters.

Did you happen to average out the sticker price for those?

you are CORRECT in that, my friend. Did not want black, wanted Lunar Rock or Nautical Blue (colors not even available in a Pro in '22!)... but when I had been seeing $15K+ markups, and had a chance to take on off the truck at MSRP, I jumped on it. Already had to have it polished and detailed to remove swirls. I won't be doing black again either.

I beg to differ. I have a 22 PRO myself and have no regrets. Gas hog, yes but do I care, nope. If I can afford one, I should have no problem paying for gas, esp being in CA. Overpriced? Nope, I got mine at MSRP. No issues there. Old tech and outdate, sure it is but I know it will last forever compared to what's in the market too.

Any vehicle, its worth what someone is willing to pay. Why so many in the market now, maybe like others had said, supply is catching up. You might not buy, dont worry, someone else will, that is for sure.

But to answer the OP's original questions... this is my opinion:

    - Supply has started catching up with demand at this trim level. Mostly because the large propensity of dealers have had Pros marked up so high, that fewer buyers are biting at that level - so more are starting to get to the dealer and not move quickly. They're opting for lower trim levels at MSRP. We should soon start to see the markups slowly go away, and then more people will by Pros once they get back to MSRP or negotiable prices.

    - The lower trim levels are still selling at or above the rate of supply - hence, fewer of these on dealer lots.

Honestly, I bought a used pro because of work & fucking snow. I went with a 2015 to make sure my pro didn’t have safety sense, no push to start & no sunroof. So I bought an Inferno pro at a great price. Wifey & kid have a reliable snow machine & I can drive my Tacoma to work!! :burnrubber:

Can someone please call their local dealers to ask if they have Pros on the lot? Then regardless of their answer, say to them "Your mom is a Pro on the lot! Duurrrrrhuurrrr!"
I feel like we've been missing an opportunity as a community.

None yet. That’s why I’m here
I have a 23 Off Road Premium coming mid November. I bought for MSRP but they are adding the black badging and factory black TRD wheels and center caps. So about 1500pkus install. Thought that was a decent deal. I like the TRD Pro but for over MRSP I can’t justify it plus I wanted Lunar Rock. I also don’t want the Pro roof rack due to wind noise. People are talk v a lot about old tech and poor mpg. That’s exactly why I’m buying it. I would take better mpg but I want the reliability that comes with where it is plus it’s made in Japan. The vehicles assembled there have amazing figment and quality control.
