Mods? None. Been there, done that. I like this one stock.
As my forum name says...I'm an old geezer. 70 and my back feels it. Lumbar fusion surgery in 2 weeks. Self-employed real estate appraiser for 35 years after getting an EE degree at Purdue in '78. 6 grandkids, all under 7; talk about chaos at family get togethers. 3 years cancer free. I know I'm in the 4th quarter but some days it feels like I'm in overtime. Can't complain. Good friends, fantastic wife that's put up w/me for 43 years, been in the stock market for 47 years so luckily money isn't a problem. I am a lucky man. Recently lost 2 good friends on the same day so remember, life is not a dress rehearsal; treat every day like its your last.

Top, I roll out at 0400 or sometimes earlier, cannot break that habit! I'm 64, don't see it going away too soon.

My cousin described retirement as “six Saturdays and a Sunday.” Sounds damn good but while I hope to leave full-time employment soon, I’ll still be writing - sequels to my novel, plus a nonfiction about my experiences responding to airline disasters - and doing ad hoc contract work teaching and consulting on the disaster work.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I’ve been involved in the field since 1993 as part of what are known as “Care Teams” or, as they’re officially known, Special Assistance Teams. They represent the organization involved, provide practical support to survivors, and help address what the NTSB identifies as the fundamental concerns of the families of those killed.
    upload_2025-12-7_12-37-44.png

The NTSB’s guiding document gives a great overview of the process. I’m happy to say the concept, started during my time at American Airlines in the early ‘90s - before legislation compelled it for all airlines - has spread across industries and the world.

For example, if you’re on a cruise, the odds are very high that numerous crew members are trained in Special Assistance Team practices. Ships are like floating cities, with deaths, crime, incapacitating illnesses, you name it. There was a deal once where a guy passed away on a ship and the cruise line’s policy required his service animal to be deboarded at the next port - even though his family understandably wanted to have it. The ship’s Care Team came together, convinced the captain to let the dog stay, and took care of it in shifts until they returned to the US and turned it over to the family.

Not their usual or official function, but adaptability is an important criteria for the people who do this.

And this evening the irritating part of old fartdom:

I've been relating my experience of front strut disassembly/reassembly in this thread.
    https://www.4runners.com/threads/strut-disassembly-you-can-do-it.45381/

I've been in no particular hurry since disassembly to do reassembly, but today was the day. I sat on a low stool and bent over to work on the task on the ground. I didn't hurt or strain myself, but when I decided to stand up, I could hardly straighten up. What a drag! I'll probably have to mess with this for a few days before it loosens up. But in reality, I've got nothing to complain about as I am (knock wood) in overall good health.
As jwctaco noted above, on this Pearl Harbor Day let's all remember and thank those who sacrificed so that we all might have the chance to grow old and crotchety.

I thought I was an old fart, but I'm not complaining about weather, so does that mean I'm NOT an old fart?

Naw...you can complain about something more local to you...e.g.: "You kids stay off my lawn" :p It is freezing outside, but I don't mind I mostly complain about the fact that my mind writes check that my body can't cash! The I just get in the T4R and go a wee bit off road to change my view...

I remember being in the Infantry in the EARLY 80s and before we left on Liberty, we had to show the Duty a Dime in case we got in trouble. I must have replaced that dime a hundred times.

Hell, I remember having a Party Line for the home phone! (No, that's not some sort of porno website)
I also remember if the black and white TV with vacuum tubes crapped out, you'd take the suspect tubes down to
the corner store to put them on a machine to test out and pick up a new vacuum tube. Take it home, pop that sucker in and problem fixed!
