Yellow so I can make out the speed bumps at the mall.

In real life I did white because it’s best for 95% of my driving conditions.

It’s been scientifically proven that white vs yellow doesn’t matter. It’s the position of the light that matters.

I think studies show certain colors of light don't (key word here -->) 'penetrate' fog more. Photons of yellow light wont go further. And no one is saying they do. However some colors make more contrast. Some force less contrast. Like having your vision blurred. Or not.

Again - I have white fogs.

Yellow DD Pro's on my 2019. I only use them on an as-needed basis. I need to see the fog line, and they work great for that.

I put the dual color bulbs from VLEDS on my 4R. I don’t know whether the yellow lights are better, but my perception is that I see better in foggy conditions with them. And whatever gives me the warm and fuzzies wins. :D

Diode does have fogs that you can select which color you want by cycling the switch. I don't think that they are available for purchase yet though.

Contrast vs “penetrating deeper” into fog. I think placement and housing quality is a big factor too.

Correct. many things go into a high-performance fog pattern light. This thread explains things in pretty easy to understand terms:

I help some teams race Baja once in a while. 3 years ago, I navigated for a 350 mile stretch of the Baja 1000. We jumped into the car as the sun was setting and got out as the sun rose. Half of the time we couldn't see the bumper on our car due to both fog and dust. I spent the majority of the time with my left hand on the light switch to turn off the white lights so we only had yellow lights on. The white lights were BLINDING and the yellow lights were not.

I have worn yellow glasses when motorcycling at night for years. I also tinted my fogs yellow (with an inexpensive film) on the 4Runner a few years ago.

For ME, it helps improve contrast and detail and is easier on my eyes.

I don't know the technical reasons why (up to and including just being my subjective opinion) but I continue to use it.

    Jason

p.s. - I have never run aftermarket fogs so have nothing to compare to to evaluate the claim that "stock ones suck". My tinted stock ones are very helpful for lighting up the area below the normal lighting such as road margins and ditches when I'm out beyond where there are street lights (we go camping in the desert a lot)

I was just trying to keep the thread alive while you guys were in bed. ;)

From what I read, true yellow fogs emit light at a lower frequency than white and are best for heavy fog, dust, rain and snow. The white is better for clear conditions. I guess the decision depends on what type of conditions you anticipate.

you can replace yellow/amber and white with 0W20 and 5W30 to keep the thread alive.

Fisherman often use colored lenses. Here’s a quick Google/AI summary.

Yes, fly fishermen absolutely use colored lenses
, which are typically polarized to reduce glare and help them see through the water's surface to spot fish and underwater structures. The specific color of the lens is chosen based on the prevailing light and water conditions.

Common Lens Colors and Their Uses
The right lens color (or tint) enhances contrast, manages light transmission, and improves visibility in different environments.
    • Amber, Copper, and Brown: These warm tints are the most versatile and popular choices for general fly fishing in rivers, streams, and lakes.
      • They excel in variable or low light conditions (overcast days, dawn, or dusk).
      • They enhance contrast and depth perception, making it easier to spot fish and underwater features in shallow or stained water.
    • Green: Green mirrored lenses often have a copper or amber base tint and are effective in a range of light conditions, especially inshore and in medium to strong light.
      • They offer excellent contrast and detail while cutting glare effectively.
    • Gray/Smoke: Gray lenses are best for bright, sunny conditions and deep or offshore water.
      • They reduce overall brightness and eye fatigue without significantly distorting natural colors.
    • Yellow/Gold: These tints are designed specifically for very low light conditions, such as early morning, late evening, or heavily overcast days.
      • They brighten the view and enhance contrast when there isn't much natural light available.
    • Blue: Blue mirrored lenses are specifically recommended for bright, open-water, and offshore fishing environments where intense, reflective light is a major issue.
Ultimately, many serious anglers use different lens colors for specific situations, but if choosing only one pair, a copper or amber lens is generally considered the best all-around solution. Eye protection from hooks is another critical reason for wearing quality fishing sunglasses.

Interesting article, sounds like what we really need are Blue light filters on our white fog lights. I can’t help but wonder if the absurd brightness of modern lights are exasperating the problem?

So… no scientific evidence to be cited here. But some personal experience.

Racing dirt bikes back in the day we had one 24 hour race a year. Rules were one bike, 3 riders. Cross country track about 25 miles long. Many many laps.

Almost every bike had yellow lights. My teams bike had a white light. About halfway through the race, lap traffic got pretty bad. Didn’t take long before we borrowed some yellow tint from another team.

Every rider on the team, including me, preferred the yellow light. It made it significantly easier to see through dust.

For those who don't have IG, you're really, really, really missing out on some cute dog videos.

I vote yellow for the fogs. In my experience, they cut through inclement weather better, but just imo.

When I ordered my DD SS3 Sport fog lights I also got the clear lenses and switched those out from the yellow. I've been considering putting the yellow lenses back on...
