Need advice from the pros. First post, thanks for having me. Have a 2017 Tundra Crewmax. Love it like a kid (almost). Significant mods and am done with that build - for now. Active member on Tundras.com.
Had a 2000 4Runner SR5. Sold it at 225,000 4 years ago. Loved it - regret selling it. My dad still has his 2001 Limited 4Runner with about 200,000 on it.
Fast-forward, and where I'd appreciate some thoughts: wife needs a new vehicle and we are thinking 4Runner or Lexus GX - I am steering her towards a Runner for obvious reasons. While I've test driven a new Gen Runner (when I bought my Tundra 2 years ago), I don't have any experience with them. Like the look of the Pro of course, but she wants a sunroof, and the 2019 Pro's (with the sunroof- I think that's the first year with them) are a little to rich for my sanity at this point. She likes the plushness and interior of the Limited, but the grill, 20-inch rims and tires look a little off to me/her. With kids, we'd like leather and perhaps 3rd row for the few instances where it is needed a year. I like the idea of KDSS, but have no experience with it - how does it compare with the suspension/ride of the AWD Limited.
Not afraid of mods, so the question is: 1) wait for some 2019 Pros to hit the used market? (I know, still pricey); 2) TRD OffRoad Premium with KDSS and add some Pro rims and grille (I did the same with my TRD OffRoad Tundra)(any issue changing out suspension/coilovers with the KDSS?)?; 3) Limited and change out the tires/wheels?; 4) SR5 premium and I mod to my liking?; 5) Lexus GX (I assume on this board no one will recommend this option?).

We won't be doing much off-roading with this Runner. That's what my Tundra is for. But we both like the look of the Off Road rigs (I do more than she does). But I am paying for the truck so I have sway!

Thanks all. Looking forward to the discussions on here and learning from the best.

I had a 2017 TacomaSport and traded it for a 2018 4Runner, I loved that truck like no other but I do really like my new 4runner. Can't go wrong with whatever model you go with.

    welcome!

Can you not get a TRD ORP with a sun roof? I would buy a used Pro (16 or 17) with a sun roof, same features with a little mileage and cheaper than new.

Research hasn’t been clear - do any Pros before 2019 have the sunroof?

Well I guess I will be the one...given all you have listed and what your wife wants, I would buy the Lexus and enjoy that V8 sweetness and those leather seats. Great vehicle.

    By the way, nice truck!

A Limited would be the best choice for on road with its AWD. I also thought about a Pro, but they’re hard to get in Canada, and I like to buy from the lot at year end. Mine is a 2018 4 Runner ORP. My previous vehicle was a 2015 Tacoma DCLB with a TRD Pro suspension + an Icon Progressive AAL. I haven’t had my ORP off road yet, but it will be great when I get there, and I’ll probably keep the suspension stock. It’s my only vehicle and it’s high enough for what I want it to do.

I changed some lights, tires and tinted windows...mind blowing huh
I don't know how tall you and your wife are but you will lose a couple of inches of headroom with the sunroof, for some its an issue. I have the KDSS and it is fantastic, for something as large and heavy as the 4runner it feels great on the road and the added articulation off road is a nice benefit as well. Is there something particular about the pro that you like, you could change the grill insert for a lot less if you went with a TRDOR premium.

Thanks for the response. Do you have KDSS? I guess I am interested in the on road behavior of the Limited versus a truck with KDSS.

I have the 2018 SR5 with lots of mods. to it so I can do my off road running. My wife has a 2014 Lexus GX 460 that she (and I) love! We use the GX for ON road trips and really like the V8 power and smooth ride that you get on pavement. My suggestion would be that you get the GX for your wife, kids and guests and use your Tundra for Off Roading! And yes, we have used the GX a little for mild off roading. LEXUS GX 460 PROS

Thanks for the response. Very helpful insight. We actually drove today a 2016 GX with 25k on it. It rode really nicely. I was impressed. That V8 is velvet. The interior and plush of the Lexus is really remarkable. And I am a Runner guy. She really liked it. If it was white (her color of choice) we probably would have brought it home. Tomorrow I convinced her to drive a Limited 4Runner and a TRD OR Premium. Wish me luck!

I've got about 2000 miles on my 19 TRD ORP with KDSS. Had it about a month so far only off road has been trailheads with my mountain bike. I love it so far. You owe it to yourself to get out and drive it. I was set to buy a new JK rubicon (JL Rubi price insane)until I drove the runner. I'm 6'3" and moonroof (headroom)is no problem. Good luck happy hunting..

Everyone is different, but I’m a female with a Pro, and I love it. I dont off road, but I really like the look of it. I also wanted a luxury car, so I ordered a Range Rover Sport. I cancelled the RRS order, as I am satisfied with the Pro. Even my father, who is a city lawyer and drives an older Range Rover and Mercedes, likes driving my Pro. Anyway, you have to get what makes your wife happy. Once she drives the 4runner, she might change her mind on the Lexus, but either way, you cant go wrong. Theyre both good vehicles.
