How many miles is the extended warranty for? I think most of us here have had no issues until well over 100K. The extended warranty will most likely be throwing away money unless it lasts to much higher mileage than that.

I'd expect warranty to be 100k maybe 120, and i know the reliability is good and it depends on the final price of the warranty. Whether I would actually go with it or not, I understand it's just insurance. It's just in case, so it's just something I would have to weigh out.

Anyone that drives to 100k and claimed they don’t have 1500 - 2000 k in repair are not telling the truth or have let things go and ignoring items that need to be replaced.

lots of little items could be replaced under Warranty but they just ignore it because it’s not major or they don’t think it’s major.

Example - limited with x-Reas. I have seen it posted on here several times that their shocks are just leaking a little and they don’t believe they are bad because it’s only a “small” leak. What they don’t seem to understand is that there should be no leaking from that system at all. And yes the Toyota extended warranty will cover it.

Toyota doesnt replace the Xreas shocks when they start leaking. They intentionally push you off as "ah thats not really that bad" in order to allow you to rack up more miles and time before the shocks actually go out. Then they start to tell you shocks with xxx miles are not covered thats simply a wear item like tires, and brakes that they dont cover. I have heard of some getting Xreas replaced by a dealer but i have heard of DOZENS that got denied by the dealers/warranty. Typically the Xreas shocks are going to last 150,000 miles which is far beyond most any warranty will cover. Its somewhat rare to see them leaking under 75,000 miles.

I spend a lot of time in the road, and rack up a BUNCH of miles. My 2008 tacoma i bought new, the first thing i had to do was wheel bearings at around 140,000 and after that, i didnt do anything to it but change the oil and brakes. I sold that truck in the summer of 2017 with 275,000 miles and never touched the diffs, trans, or driveline. I bought my 2008 4runner only a few years old with relatively low mileage. It didnt get a SINGLE thing to it until about 140,000 miles when i put the first set of brakes on it. After that was an alternator around 185,000 miles (most likely due to oil change place dripping oil into alternator) and after that was the Xreas going out around 195,000 and then the evaporator o-ring blew out around 220,000 miles. Since then i have been proactively replacing some stuff as i work on a few things here and there but these two vehicles have practically ZERO out of pocket expense until 140,000 miles.

My 2012 Limited 4Runner that was my wifes, that has now been handed down to our daughter, has never been at a Toyota dealership after they botched an oil change and broke the oil filter housing and sent her home with it pissing oil everywhere somewhere around 30,000 miles. That 2012 has been the absolute epitome of bulletproof. Sure the Xreas went out on it and i changed the shocks myself somewhere around 180,000 but aside from that it has never been hooked to a dealership computer, never been at a dealer service bay for warranty work, and has had practically no out of pocket expenses in its 220,000 miles.

Sounds like you need a new dealer and or make a complaint with corporate to force the dealer to do their job. Yes it’s covered under the extended warranty and any leak is a failure because it’s a sealed system. It’s not in the same category as a regular shock. Most of the guys at the dealership assume it would not be covered and are too lazy to call and ask so the tell you it’s not covered. I learned a long time back that the people that work in their service department only have that job because they found someone with a pulse that doesn’t mind working for chump change. I forced my dealership to call and sure enough it was covered just like I told them it would be.

Had a tech tell me once that a small leaky valve cover is not an issue and didn’t need to be fixed. Had a sit down with his manager and a factory rep and asked was it engineered to leak? They said no so my next question is why is it leaking. Next day I had a new valve cover gasket installed for free.

I’m over 120K miles now and the only thing that has been replaced other than brakes and fluids is a rear brake caliper. That happened recently so it would have been past the 100K warranty anyway. If not it cost much less to repair than the extended warranty would have cost anyways.

How much you want to bet a qualified tech could have gone over the whole truck and found items that would have qualified to be replaced under warranty? I have yet to have a one that has not needed items replaced that the average person didn’t know about or ignored because they thought it was something small.

Yep! Exactly, I've had similar with other brands, even a class action suit for leaking sunroof on a vw, settlement entitled me to 50% of repair to.be covered car was 7 years old, had to talk to vw corporate, dealer didn't know anything about it wanted me to pay full price.

Such as what. Also what makes you think that I’m not a qualified mechanic?

Well if your qualified you would know what I am saying wouldn’t you?

there is a difference between saying it’s good enough and saying it’s not to specifications. People and lazy techs ignore lots of little things.

Another example I had was a transmission mount. We found a few cracks in the rubber and got it replaced under warranty. I could have kept the old one but after time it was only going to get worse so why not get a new one and start the clock on that item over

I purchased a 7/100,000 platinum when I got my 2017. At 48,000 miles Toyota replaced torque converter and transmission to fix a defective torque converter FlexLock component inside the tranny valve body. Drivability problem was shudder/chatter. I had aged out of my 5/60,000 powertrain warranty so the platinum covered $8k in dealer billing.

I saved a pic of my platinum, now fully expired. Covered items are easy to identify.

Another reason someone may consider a 10 year extended warranty is inflation creep. In 2015 a $1,000 repair is now $1,367 in today’s dollars (due to inflation). I don’t know but I would guess that Toyota Service costs have gone up that much or more likely more. Inflation seems to go up a little every year. Who knows what repair cost will be in another 10 years. The warranty purchased today can give you extra years peace of mind.
Of course if you trust nothing will happen to your T4R during the warranty period, this thought is moot.

Just throwing another target up to be shot at, slow Sunday until game time.
