if it is a certified toyota you get 7/100k powertrain warranty. I personally am not a fan of extended warranties. I would prefer to take $200/month and put it in a savings account for any repairs. 67% of extended warranties go unused. Ask me how I know. I work for a very reputable extended warranty company. Just out of curiosity, what does a Gold warranty cost from toyota? However, to your original question, if you are going to do it, get the toyota one like you said. I've heard horror stories about CarShield.

Direct from Toyota or nothing at all.

I don't know if they still offer it but mine was a cash back if you ended up not using it.

i didnt buy it from a toyota dealer thats why i dont have the certified preowned, i only want the toyota warranty and some dealers will sell them at reduced cost, someone on this forum knows, i know for my ford Bronco a place called Grainger in the midwest is always spoke of as selling warranties at cost.

You still have the powertrain warranty and might have some left on the bumper-to-bumper. Figure out when the vehicle went into service and go from there to estimate end dates.

So you already have the remainder of the Toyota warranty.

Dealers sell warranties from third-parties, I don’t think Toyota even offers such coverage themselves especially for a car that was purchased used and from elsewhere.

Save your money in case you get unlucky. You bought a 4Runner not a Bronco or Stellantis product after all.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Wow. That number is high. Is that overall or for Toyota’s? I’m curious what the numbers are for 5th Gen SloRunners.

Im pretty sure totota sells a warranty, its called toyota extra care, comes in platinum, gold and power train levels. You can purchase it from a dealership, just some sell them cheaper than other, and its toyota warranty not third party.

Yes, you're 100% correct, I have seen those posts with the reduced cost. And yes, only get it from toyota. Do you know what a reduced priced warranty runs? Just curious.
Overall. Yeah the likelihood of you needing that warranty is very low. Thats how they stay in business. A majority of the profit comes from people who trade in their vehicle before their warranty is up. Plus, companies like CarShield are really scamming their customers, we are hearing reports from customers who state that their warranty was declined because they went 2-300 miles over their oil change interval AND CarShield buying cheap parts off of ebay and having them shipped to the repair shop. I tell everyone who has a warranty to keep EVERY receipt for service and try to have all your repairs at one shop so they too have a record. I am sure that toyota's warranty is very good - if i were to buy one, it would be through toyota. Plus with a toyota warranty you're getting a certified toyota mechanic and parts. But i go back to my original post where I said I am not a fan of extended warranties on anything, I would put $2-300 in an account each month and use that in case a major repair came up. After a year you'd have about $3,600 in that account. The likelihood of a toyota engine or trans going is very very low

100% agree with what you said. You bought a toyota, you will prbably never even need to use it. Yes, if i bought a ford or stellantis I would 100% buy an extended warranty.

I can probably get you that information on 5th gen toyota's. I work in Cyber Security not on the business side so I remember during orientation that was presented as they walked us through "how the company makes money". The company i work for is really good at honoring the warranty.

When I bought mine in 2022 the sales rep talked to me about prices of an extended warranty.

The topic changed promptly after he said "I mean you won't need it... It's a 4Runner"

    Don't waste your money

all other companies are a scam no matter how much their agents try to defend them. Just go ask an independent shop about the nightmare they are.

Toyota warranty is through Toyota. You only have to deal with Toyota not call a 3rd party and get approval etc. I've done and used it before. Unless your dealer is trying to push a different warranty.

I thought the same before I usually avoid the extended warranty as well. But on the wifes RX350 there is much damn motors and electronics we decided to and good thing.

    We had to replace
Blower vent was squealing when it cycled.
Both rear hatch struts made a lot of noise when closing
One mirror motor started having seizures

100% agree with you. Most are a scam. I was talking to the owner where I take my 4Runner and he said they're a nightmare to do business with. He was telling me that one of his customers needed some repair and the owner of the shop had to answer like 50 questions about the car, the repair history, any modifications etc. If he answered "yes" to modifications, for sure it would be denied.

BUT did those parts add up to what you paid for the warranty?

No idea honestly. But I'm pretty sure my extended was less than $5k

I'd have to ask wife if she still got the paperwork. Once they said its free I didn't care.

And we only got 40k on the vehicle. Still a loooooong way to go unless we get rid of it.

Yes i worry mostly about the electronics and stuff, not so much. The engine, but you never know. And then that's why I want to check places that have reduced costs. Because I need to compare the price for a $1200-1500 Something like that, I might get it.

Is that all it costs? That seems low. What coverage/mileage do you get with that?

Im trying to buy one, I've seen people state online that they paid dealer cost and it was $1200, but dealers mark up and charge $2K or??? ALSO, they're many varieties, like 6byear 75K miles, 6 years 120k miles then other configurations plus different deductibles. So I plan to check with dealers BUT I know there are dealers who are KNOWN to sell the warranty near cost, that is the origin of my question, which dealers sell warranty at low price because I know there are some

The issue with 3rd party warranties is they will fight you to death. They will find every little bull shit reason to deny it.

If mine wasn't from Toyota/Lexus I would not get it at all.

I like this idea, and the one about putting money into a specific savings account for potential future repairs.

    Why?
Six years or so ago, I bought a diesel VW, used. I think I spent another $1500 for an extended warranty, simply adding a few bucks to the monthly. Last week I got a rash of trouble codes and an error I can’t correct. I know the extended VW warranty has expired, but I went digging through the paperwork for the extended warranty goods. As it turns out, that warranty expired six months ago. Now I’m facing potentially expensive repairs, without warranty coverage. Grrrr!

In hindsight, I sort of wasted that money. If I had put that money into a savings account instead of a warranty company’s pockets, I’d still have it and I wouldn’t be sweating the cost of the upcoming repairs (as much). To be fair, if I had been putting those “few extra bucks” a month into savings and had a costly repair early on, I wouldn’t have been happy about that situation. But if I had put that same $1500 into savings at the time of purchase, it would be worth a good bit more now (when I’m facing out-of-warranty repair costs) and would still be in my own pocket.

Yea I get the savings account only thing I think is IF you need a big repair warranty pays and you still have it there's no limit. It seems none of ya have had a dealer repair. Never leave less than $500, seems like. But if its over $2K ill probably skip it,

I know 4runner has a great reliability record, thats why I bought one especially the 2024 before the new change in 25, however I have seen plenty at the dealer being fixed, and if mine is ever one of them a warranty might help, I've had 3 Tacoma and 2 tundra, yea few repairs BUT Tacoma had issues with the heater fan and 1 of my tundra needed catalytic converters for $2800. So, it happens.
