Having a 2nd gen Toyota 4Runner that is in fairly nice shape, I'd like to get a security system for it. What do you all recommend for security systems for 1st and 2nd Gen 4Runners? I'm finding a lot like this one on Amazon, but I don't know how they work, so if you do, please explain how the alarm is set off.

    This is what I use:

I also have an AirTag hidden in my ride, in the event it is ever stolen. I can track it with ease.

Haha, thats what I need. But not legal to carry around always where I am. But yeah, the Remington is the best security deterrent! :D Airtag is also a good idea I may consider.

Air Tags are effect, and cheap. So are kill switches. Lots of guys on this site are big fans of them. But if you don't know how to wire that up, it can cause other issues (shorts or electric gremlins).

Issue with a firearm usually is staying awake.

Or you can get a Jeep:

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qixADzMU58o

    (I kid)

Anyways, I had a Compustar system on a Kia and the glass break/shock sensor was way too sensitive, even at the lowest sensitivity so I ended up using it for the remote start and starter kill (via fob) system anyway.

Layers of protection is key. I have a few deterrents but my alarm is the main one. It's a Compustar t13 that also is a remote start. The big advantages are that the key fob has 3mi range and will notify me remotely that someone is breaking in via shock sensors or doors opening. It also has an app option with unlimited range.

My favorite alarm company is DEI/Python, but they were not compatible with my 5th gen.

Manual Killswitch, and AirTags. I’d like to have a glass break sensor, but I haven’t found one for an affordable price

On a serious note tho - trackers behind the plastics in weird hard to get to random places. Trackers in the under carriage in really hard to get to or see places in water proof key magnet boxes.

Take the wheels off of it everytime you park. They can't steal it if they can't drive it away!

Just curious how a firearm helps. As far as I can remember from my safety class I can only pull the trigger when a child is inside the vehicle. If not, advised let the thief to take the vehicle and I deal with a law enforcement and insurance.

I also never leave firearm in the vehicle (in locked glove box since I don't have a firearm safe in vehicle) unless I have to go to a place unplanned where firearm not permitted.

    So IMO , practically to protect the vehicle I would use;
    1) door security system if not equipped from factory. (I have done this to an older vehicle. The impact sensor was interesting in the scenarios when parked on road side when big vehicle pass and also lightning where it triggers the alarm. So I arm in silent mode when park on side of the road or when there's a rain storm.)
    2) hidden kill switch.
    3) gps tracking device hardwire to accessory ( so only works when car is on, not to drain 12v battery when parked.)
    4) a good steering wheel lock if really want to for an older vehicle. (Very inconvenient to my taste though)

In the United States of Texas, we have a law "Castle Doctrine", which means if I am in imminent threat (with or without a child), I can use my firearm to protect myself, my family and my possessions. I hope to God I never have to use it in such a manner though.

But I see your point. If I'm not in or near the vehicle and it gets stolen, what good is a hand gun? That's where alternate measures come into play. Alarms, Kill switches, Steering wheel locks/boots, Apple Air Tag.

Laws on when it’s ok to shoot are very location dependent. So what’s legal where you live might not be legal where I live. I know here you have to be in fear of your life. For example, you’re getting car jacked and you have a reason to believe the carjacker is going to kill you.

Whereas me shooting a guy in the back of the head when I see him trying to break into my car is looked down on.

As someone who lives in Texas and also has a LE background, I recommend you consult with an attorney about your specific limitations. It’s also necessary for anyone to contemplate if they can take a human life at all, and if so, under what circumstances.

Now back to the discussion, I also used Loco’s advice on how and where to hide the air tag in my truck. If you think about it, a thief with an IPhone will be able to see that one is in there somewhere, but when they can’t hear it or find it quickly they’ll likely go pick another vehicle. Same with the steering wheel lock. Can you cut them with a power tool? You bet. Does every thief carry one since steering wheel locks aren’t exactly common? No. Again, they might just go find something easier.

I was taught (both in the military and in civilian fire arm training), do not pull your weapon unless you are prepared to use it. And if you pull it, you BETTER pull that trigger. If you don't, you give your attacker the advantage to take your weapon away from you. They will pull the trigger until they hear "Click".

An AirTag or some other type of visual deterrent will make most thieves skip your vehicle. They want a very quick, very easy score. They're lazy fucks. Which is why they steal for a living.

The thing I recommend most to everyone is this: Carry as much insurance as you can and don't fight for your vehicle if someone is trying to take it. It's just a pile of metal, glass and plastic. It can be replaced. You cannot be replaced. It isn't worth your life.

Listen, if you’re not in your vehicle and there isn’t an eminent threat of bodily harm, the castle doctrine doesn’t mean shit. Don’t care if you’re in Texas. We have the castle doctrine as well, as soon as I exit the vehicle the castle doctrine is gone.

I agree with you and also know that once I step away from my vehicle that it doesn't apply. That is why I advocate strongly for everyone to carry a lot of insurance.

AirTag (but only works when there’s another apple product nearby) and a Bouncie.

Bouncie is an always-on GPS tracker that texts me when car starts/stops, accelerates hard, brakes hard and various other things that you want it to tell you. I always know where my 4R is 24/7 and it costs $9.60 per month. I got it from Amazon.
