What would you do about this rust spot?

I have a 2022 4Runner with 17k miles on it. I found this rust spot on the inside of the door. I thought about touching it up but it’s right at this seam and I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to touch it up well enough to prevent any further rusting and I don’t want to be disqualified from having a dealership repair it due to me messing with it. Do you think this is something that would be fixed by Toyota? Since it’s the inside of the door I have no idea how it could have chipped other than it being a paint defect.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

What would I do about it? I'd take it to the local dealership and let them fix it under warranty. You have a 2022 w/17k miles. You're within your range for bumper-to-bumper and corrosion. Don't let this be your problem, it is the DEALERSHIPS problem.

Get it fixed for free, and correctly.

Maybe my 4R has been out of warranty for so long that I don't care, and I never once took it back. But dealerships are douchers. Can fix that yourself pretty EZ
Goodluck man, I understand that's a piss off to find that tiny rust spot regardless tho

Yuck. That looks like rust that has root…has those little bubbles around the paint that is still adhering. You could try the dealer, but I’m not sure if the warranty covers rust until it perforates the metal.

If they do, I can imagine a low quality quick touch up to get you out the door. All you have is time to lose, so it might be worth trying. Unless they charge you a 180 dollar “diagnostic fee” for somebody to say it’s not warranty.

Not only will they not fix it for free, they wont fix it correctly. There is no perforation, they arent going to touch it.

Toyota warrantied my paint issue on the rear hatch where the handle was rubbing through the paint and rust was forming. I'd give the dealer a try and see what they say.

That was my fear. I can scrape away some of the paint and touch it up but from what I can see the rust has gotten underneath the seam and extends a little further. I think I’ll take it to a few dealers and see what they suggest as a repair and if would be covered under warranty. The dealer I bought it from is about an hour and a half away but they have been helpful with previous issues I’ve had. There’s a local dealer that has a Toyota body shop on-site so I was hoping they would be able to do a more legit repair.

I would ask for a whole new door; why do a repair only to come back again.

^A new door would need to be painted in its entirety, no better than sanding this one down to remove rust and respraying.
So just make an appt with that local dealer. :notsure:

I was thinking a new door only because I would think that seam would be compromised now but I am not a body shop guy. I just always read rust never permanently goes away that’s why I think new metal

Well I went to my local Toyota dealer that has a body/collision department and was quoted $500. The quote included removing the door to sand and repaint.

While I believe this is a “professional” repair and am fine with the price, I decided to hold off and weigh my options. Kind of disappointed this didn’t fall under warranty with this specific dealer.

My main concern is preventing rust from continuing to form and spread so I may just try my best to abrade any visible rust and hit it with some touch up paint. I feel like removing the door opens me up to potentially having more issues than what I started with considering the interior trim panels and door need to be removed. Seems like many opportunities for additional dings and scratches to occur, plus things never seem to go back together as well as they first did from the factory and the factory seam sealer would need to be sanded down and reapplied. Considering the door needs to come off, I think I’d rather try to do a decent enough of a job touching up the paint myself.

Personally I would sand the spot to remove the rust and a little more paint to make sure its clear of rust, then hit it with some touch up paint and move on. $30 fix

I'd just grind it, ospho and paint.

Be done before you could get to the dealer. (minus the waiting time for the ospho)

It’s not really in a visible spot, so at least your repair doesn’t have to be perfect. If the access is good, I’d suggest sanding the rust off till bare metal, including the slightly bubbled area. Then put a couple of good coats of high zinc content primer, then top coat with paint. If there is some defect in the base metal, then the zinc will help control growth of rust.

Dab it with a little bit of POR15. Dab right over the rust, don't scrape or sand it first. POR15 only adheres to rusted metal, or freshly sandblasted metal.

I have been dealing with the same thing on my 2019. Shitty dealer service manager (who has not returned any phone calls or has sent me an email spelled correctly) got $3000 repair approved (new door) at 50/50 split between Toyota and Me. This has been on going since August, can't get the dealer body shop to schedule me, can not get an answer why only half is covered by Toyota when its under warranty. About to fix it myself. Toyota corporate and this specific dealer have dropped the ball. Great truck but man, Toyota corporate and warranty repairs suck.

Yep, even if under warranty, you're going get some slack on paint issues, always have. Luckily you caught it early, and repair is fairly easy to do yourself. I understand that's not the point but I would rather just fix myself and know that it's fixed. Even if you went to the dealer, make sure it is at least documented on an invoice, if need be, get documentation 2 or 3 times from that dealer or another Toyota dealer close to you. If it becomes a major issue, you will have proof that you took it in multiple times and nobody was willing to fix it. Then present that to Toyota directly. But this normally only works if you are the original owner. I was a Service Manager for 20+ years with Porsche, Audi and Acura for the same dealership, paint issues are always tricky. But at least I can spell...;)

Well I managed to squeeze a handheld dremel and brass bristle attachment in far enough to grind away the rust. Had to go about a quarter inch below and above the exposed rust to get rid of everything under the paint. Got it down to bare metal, wiped it down with some rubbing alcohol and put 3 coats of dr.colorchip waiting 20 minutes between each coat. It’s not as pretty as I had hoped but as long as the rust doesn’t come back I’m happy with it all things considered. Once the touch up paint cures for a week I’ll hit it with some wax or sealant for added insurance.
