I think the 5th Gen will hold its value very well when 6th comes out.

There will be a lot of people like myself that will want a few years for the 6th to prove itself and its durability all over again, and that only comes with time particularly given however many engine/tranny changes take places plus simple things like fit/finish. So I think anyone who has a nice 5th then will do quite well because I would think many educated buyers will say they want the 5th for the reasons we buy them.

Look at what the new gen tundra has done to the last gen. Much a difference? No.

If the Tundra has been any indication, I would guess it's going to drive up value on the 5th gen (especially). While I've never really cared about engine size (much more about overall performance), many people do. I would have to assume the 4 banger turbo is going to garner a similar reaction to the Tundra's new V6 Turbo. Only time will tell but I'd be feeling pretty good if I were a previous gen owner about the new release.

If the new gen isn't BOF, tried and true NA engine with bulletproof reliability, and not made in Japan, then I think the 5th gen will become very sought after and resale will be crazy. For me it doesn't matter as I am keeping it forever, if it gets totaled, I will just rebuild. I love this vehicle and will drive it until I croak.

Known long term reliability vs new tech…..play it safe or gamble on more complexity I think is the question.

Yes, but consider if you were forced to sell it for some reason. What about if it gets written off by insurance? You will be very happy that it retained its value. I got a great deal on my Taco back in June 2020 and will be in a nice position if I end up trading it in for a 4Runner this year.

WILL probably drive up prices...but then again, the used 4runner bubble might burst....unless the 6th gen is some sort of awesome monster ride, I won't be signing on to that party, as I'm happy tooling along with my Gen 3...

As a retired senior that keeps vehicles a long time I really don’t care, my kids might when they inherit. We just wanted a tried and true vehicle that doesn’t have recalls every month to deal with and has boring uneventful trips.

My take it on it is, the SR5 and Limited trim level used prices will drop after the 6th Gen is into its 2nd year. By that time, lots of issues will be worked out on initial quality. We know, regardless of long term concerns, the new Gen will be more fuel efficient, more gears and most likely more torque. This will appeal to entry buyers and Limited model buyers that don’t really take this vehicle off-road. The off road guys will be skeptical and there won’t be a ton of parts available for mods yet. By year 3, as more vendors have mods available and we see more 6th gens offroad, there will start to be an interest from our community. I think a few folks will start to be allured by the more torque, better mpg and more gears to try out for overlanding. Even more so if Toyota designs the body to be able to fit larger tires without mods, front diff locker and improvements similar to the Bronco, as I don’t think Jeep will be the focus of their perception for competition.

I think new vehicles are going to increase in price to a point that a used “old” 4Runners will be seen as a bargain compared to the 6th gen.
We have all experienced our current inflation, it is no different than what the auto manufacturers are dealing with. Raw materials have gone up, suppliers cost have gone up, labor has gone up, shipping/transportation has gone up, energy to run the factory…….etc. I expect a minimum of 10% increase in MSRP, quite possibly more, that increase will pull up the 5th gen value. I bet you will need ~ $50K for a mildly optioned 6th gen SR5.

I am going on 4 years of my 19 4R resale value being the same $$$ as when I purchased. No 6th gen will ever do that.

That's what a friend of mine paid for her 23' ORP/MR about three weeks ago.

On my 21' ORP/MR I took delivery in early May of 21'. But had a written price agreement in Mid March of that year. Seems I got in just under the wire, at the 11th hour before the crazy pricing started. If I had waited even another week or two I probably would have had to pay MSRP+.

I think prices are holding strong. I was able to pick up a 23' TRDORP for $48K out the door in November of last year. Im not sure if that was a fluke, but I swooped it up.
