    Hey community!

I just bought my first 4Runner last week (still own 09 Rav 4 Limited and traded in 13 Prius). I'm not a total gearhead, but not an idiot under a hood either. Most of my experience was with cars that weren't super computerized like todays vehicles so I have some learning to do.

I use the vehicle for normal every-day use, commute to work, take the wife and 2 kids around (have to medium sized dogs but for now, they are restricted to the Rav). Won't go off-roading, may tow some things here and there, will probably take this on vacation, etc.

What are some fun things I can do to the 4Runner? I ordered some weather tech mats, they are a must. Will replace the internal bulbs with some LEDs. Thinking about an auto-start (live in MN, its fricking cold here). What else?

My dad works at O'Rileys so I can get some things on a decent discount too.

Looking forward to being a part of the community, thanks for all the knowledge!

    -Trevor

For how you plan to use it I’d put a dash cam in it to protect yourself and leave it alone. The 4Runner is infinitely more capable than you’ll ever need it to be, so long as your not trying tow something ridiculous.

    Congrats on the new 4Runner!

I would tint the the windows, upgrade the rear cargo light bulbs , find some nice looking license plate frames, and drive for a while to see what you like and don't like

On my 2016 runner I did install interior LED's.. much brighter .
the back up lamps I replaced with much brighter LED'S .. works good backing into my very dark drive way ..
I fabricated floor mats in the front with rubber roofing . then placed the Toyota mat on top . the mat works with the toyota lock in place fasteners.. 3 years now rug has no dirt /wear. rubber roofing is 1/8inch thick.. did this on my GM truck .. GM truck 20yrs now still holding up.. rugs look like new.no rock salt mess..

I also place a plastic shield on the HVAC condenser .. blocks 50% of the air flow and warms up the engine faster when the below 30F temps hit.. dec-march .. also keeps out de-icing chemicals..

Like said above, most 4Rs are more capable than their drivers. If yours is a 4x4 model and you want a little more capability, swap your 20s for 17s and get some basic AT tires and then go enjoy yourself. (Maybe buy some *basic* safety and recovery gear.) Don't load up with stuff until you know you need it.

    Thanks for all the replies!

So far, basically not much lol. Get a dash cam, any good recommendations?

Also, j_cat, what rear bulbs did you upgrade to? Dark driveway here as well so appreciate all lighting upgrade ideas!

This is an awesome reverse bulb. They’re like $13 for the pair. Hard to beat. I don’t know of a better cost/performance value.

And if you put Sylvania Zevo 168/194 LED’s in your license plate bulbs... it lights up the ground a bit. In combination with the Sirius 921 reverse bulbs, it makes the image really bright in the back up cam.

The AVS Bug Deflector 2 is also a nice mod. They run about $60 and protect the hood from rock chips. I like it better than their low profile version. And it’s plenty low profile anyway. No contact with paint. It attaches on the underside of the hood and sits about an inch over the top of the hood. Can hardly see it from the drivers seat.

Clear bra on anything that faces forward ("a" pillars, mirrors and the fronts of the rear fender flairs). Door handle pockets, too.

    Welcome!

Like the others have said, these things rule in stock form.

There are plenty of upgrades that will enhance the truck. The lighting suggestions are excellent ideas, which I need to get done as well.

Otherwise, just keep looking around on this site, and you'll find all kinds of threads about things you're going to "need" :D

So are the "reverse bulbs" in the rear lights?!?

Tonight I upgraded all interior lights and rear license plate bulbs to nice LEDs so its bright white. But not sure about the difference between rear license plate lights and "reverse bulbs."

Any one have a good dash cam recommendation? I'd prefer to not have a power cord running anywhere, if that even exists.

I'm going to grab that bug shield. I also have an '09 Rav 4 Limited and have had a bug deflector on that as well, looks nice and does its job over the years.

So far: interior LEDs, will get bug deflector, dash cam (need recommendations), rear bulbs (whatever those are).

What else?!?! This is too simple!!!!!

    Thanks yall!

License plate lights are only there to illuminate the license plate when your headlights are on.

The 4Runner's reverse lights are integrated into your tail lights and illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse so you can see behind you while backing up.
