What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

I actually love project farm. He’s one of the few that I enjoy watching. Top tear gas is a thing and 87 is all we need, first oil change at 2k, 5k oil changes since then, nitrogen is absolutely useless in tires.

 

I had K&N in my Tacoma for a long time. Took it out several times to clean it out. Never had any issues. But everyone has different experiences.

 

These weren't all done today, but within the last two weeks, so I'll throw it all in one post:

-Added MESO black doorhandle covers (this sounds small and silly, but after being blinded when driving south in the morning by the chrome passenger handle, it's a Godsend)
-OME 2" lift kit with heavy coils and UCAs installed (by the awesome folks at HeftyFab)
-Gobi ladder and Victory 4x4 roof rack installed (by me...about the limit of my skillset so far lol)
-Two Pelican/Storm iM3300 cases bolted to the roof rack

I bought a Warn EVO winch, but it's waiting for the HeftyFab front bumper, which is on order.

 

Why do you say nitrogen in tires is a scam? You know that it is supposed to help in colder climates. Not necessarily beneficial for weather here in North Carolina (from what I heard). Nitrogen escapes slower than air. Would I go out of my way to fill with Nitrogen? Nope I won’t. However, Costco does it for free so I say whatever.

 

How often do you have to fill your tires? Once maybe twice a year? If it’s free and safes a few minutes, sure why not. When shops try to sell it to people at $200 like it’s gold, that’s a scam.

 

I agree with that. People should not pay. Otherwise I would just use air. I deflate when I Offroad so anything other than air is pointless since I refill with my onboard air.

 

Thanks! I really like what they did with the 40th Anniversary Edition. The ice cap white is perfect for the color combos of the graphics and bronze badging.

 

I wasn't planning on flares but your comment had me going down the rabbit hole, black flares would look good. Problems finding the right match in the front that stop before bumper maybe since I clearance cut the front bumper n fender liner

 

It reminds of starsky and hutch. Which i think was in the 70ties

How long have you had this done? Any error code issues?

 

26 months. No errors. This comes into play only for briefs periods at engine startup and shutdown.

I have had it installed on my 2013 Tacoma for over 100,000 miles with no issues & 7,000 miles on my 2022 4Runner.

Any of you on Reddit may have already seen this. but I changed my oil on my truck yesterday for its 15k oil change. I totally forgot my blackstone oil sample kit at home in my rush to leave but I thought, ah no big deal, its only at 15k miles, and I doubt there's anything to worry about wear wise. Boy was I wrong once I cracked open the oil filter canister... My last oil change was performed at one of the local dealerships (that did get better reviews than a lot of the other ones in my area). Really just disappointing that the simple job of making sure you use the right filter is so hard for a lube tech.

 

took the 97 4Runner out for a spin..running solid at 300,166 miles with good ol’ annual maintenance..

2021 4R so far 18,382..definitely hoping I can get 300 as well “fingers crossed”..

 

Also, do not change your oil every 15k miles, poor engine, even if the manual or oil brand says it. You will have all sorts of issues down the line. Oil gets acidic over time and will eat up and corrode seals. Its a marketing gimmick. Toyota engines will last forever if you change oil every 3-5k miles. Take care of your baby, you paid a lot for it.

 

not sure what part of my post made you think its been 15k miles since the last oil change. The toyota dealer changed my oil at 10k, and I was changing it at 15 since its easy and the dealership only wants to change the oil at the 10k mark.

 

Ha! I'm always out there looking for trails. One of these days hit me up and we can trail together. Its always good to go with a buddy in case anything happens.

 

Well thats good to hear. I assumed because you mentioned you said you did the 15k mile oil change. My friend works at the dealer and tells me the horror stories when people change oil at 10k miles.

 

I believe it! especially if you happened to get the wrong filter installed! Probably explains why my oil was so much darker after 5k than it was for the last oil change.

So I just got off the phone with the manager of the service department and he and his manager went down to look at their inventory. What they found was that they had over 15 filters that were mislabeled by toyota. They had YZZA5 on the box but the filters were clearly the A1's. They pulled all those filters out, sent them to the part department to get in touch with toyota about this and called some customers who may have gotten the wrong filter so they can fix that mistake and thanked me for bringing this to their attention as they wouldn't have known otherwise. Maybe he was blowing smoke up my backside but I hope he was being sincere as this is one of the best rated service departments in the area.
