What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Took out the DCM and put in a by-pass connection.

 

Honestly I’ve been commuting to work in the 4R this week and I don’t notice a big difference in sound funny enough. I’m hoping to see a slight reduction in mpg tho, standby on that.
My wife hates the look of no rack now. I never know what her reaction will be to sh*t

*edit: I did notice less rack noise on the highway today, real rainy

went exploring on the other side of the dam for new off-road trails, low traffic forest service roads, and small unmarked lake I noticed had a skinny road leading to it.










found one unmarked active trail, near the forest powerline right-of-way, that was cool






all other trailheads and roads ended with gates or private property signs, this time.

Rustproofing touch up today, truck was in the body shop in October. By the time it was done, he was booked until today. Fortunately it’s clear and dry today . New bumper and lift gate needs some rustproofing

Even though you can "opt-out" of Toyota services through it, they still collect data and may or may not sell it. There's been reported cases where GM through On-Star they've sold data which included specific VINs and such. In some extreme cases, since they tie VINs to it, some insurers have increased insurance premiums just because their driving habit data is recorded. Plus, when connected through bluetooth or CarPlay it will collect data from your phone and even phone calls as well.

Yes, smartphones do the same, but the collection of cookies makes sense because all apps are free and they need $$$ to keep the servers running... a 4Runner is a $45k+ vehicle. I couldn't care less what Toyota's target profits are, I'm already paying tens of thousands for a vehicle; they shouldn't be rolling data collection centers for their profit. No excuses.

Page 9 is the step-by-step guide and also the link to the by-pass harness is there as well. If you know how to change your 4Runner's oil, you should be able to this is no problem.

Advance Auto and Autozone are unloading their remaining stock of Fram and Purolator air filters for 80% off. I just grabbed some engine and cabin filters for each vehicle.

 

I live in Colorado where we have very cold tems and also very hot temps in summer. For me, in the winter I will keep the 0w20 and for the summer, I may do the 5w30. Well see. My car runs well though and is not a heavy hauler. I mostly use it on weekends to go into the mountains.

 

some nights I dream about Canada unloading imaginary remaining stock of anything for the 4R at 80% off

 

New goo for winter, nice thing about this stuff is smells like orange citrus, critters don’t like it and stay away from the engine bay. It’s a thin oily substance that needs annual touch up. It’s definitely worth it if you live in a salt state

Cleaned throttle body with Seafoam TB spray. I had a left over wand and sprayed half a can in the throttle body and half in rear intake plug that's capped, alternating front and rear wands while running. Set 30 minutes and drive it. Smokes like a blown motor for a few miles. Driving around in 3rd helps clear it out faster. At 245k, I can't believe how smooth and easy this engine runs and revs. I didn't even throw a CEL with it running alternating wands. Any way, that's what I did. Maintenance time.

 

Installed 1/2 Cali Raised cat shields.

Driver’s side went on fine but the package is missing three washers for installation so I can’t do the other side.

 

post-roof rack: three work days w/ a number of 4R highway kilometers, I’ve monitored the wind noise, side wind effect, rattling, and mileage.

Surprisingly negligible, actually.
What’s not negligible is how nice disengaging KDSS improved ride on windey bumpy commute above 20mph

Are there any un wanted gremlins that might show up?

Nothing, but you have to install the by-pass. If you do the pull the fuse method your right front speaker and your mic wont work.

 

Picked up the 4Runner after the folks at Westcott Designs added a few things to the rig……
-rock sliders
-low profile roof rack with light bar
-low profile bumper with light bar
-ladder
-new fogs
-front coils, rear shocks, springs, new bump stops.

 

Which bumper is that? I don’t see it on Westcott’s web site.
