I know this is a REALLY late reply but I'll bet if you replace your fuel pump it will start every time...I had the same thing and replaced mine with a Denso fuel pump...it's actually a really easy fix under the rear seat passenger side plate.

Yep...get some U joints and replace all...at least the rear and the ones behind the transfer case...they will break at the worst possible time...

I'm not sure if I am responding right...but I want to help...I had exactly the same very frustrating problem and I decided to replace the fuel pump under the rear passenger seat...really easy fix!!! I bought a Denso which had a new filter and replace it and haven't had a hot start problem for 3 years...I hope I helped someone...it was like $35.00 fix and about an hour of work...worth it!!!

I know...I thought this on mine too...it's...in my opinion not the AFM...it's the fuel pump...easy fix...get a Denso and flop the rear seat forward like a truck bed...there is a plate on the passenger side rear seat with a bunch of screws...pull it and then pull the plate to the fuel tank then pull the fuel pump assembly out...Oh...and if your a smoker avoid smoking at this step...plug the new Denso in with new filter and watch...it will start ever time!!!

What did I do to MY truck, well, my 4Runner, not my pickup, today? :smashpc:

I took a medium weight ballpeen hammer, and beat the living C^%$ out of the catalytic converter. A mechanic I used to work with recommended doing this when you do the normat tune-up stuff, oil, spark plugs, wires, etc etc. He said it keeps the bedding stirred up, if you're not out wheeling enough to do it that way. Keeps it from plugging up, too. That's what he said, and as a mechanic, I'm a darn fine radar technician, so I took his word.
Of course, later he also suggested taking a large, heavy screwdriver, sticking it into the cat, swirling it around until the bedding is all stirred loose, and dumping it all in the trash.

Is either action worth a darn as far as making the truck run better? I have NO clue. All I can say is that after I did the abuse of the cat, the exhaust DID smell different than it has in a while. Yes, I've been remiss in the proper abuse of my 4Runner, and haven't beat the C&^% out of the cat in a lot longer than I should have.
:sorry: BAD Pat! 50 lashes with an over-cooked spaghetti noodle for me...

Anywho, that's what I did to my 4Runner today.
    Have fun, all!

Hey everyone, I'm new to the site. I recently picked up a 88 4runner, 250700 miles and she runs like a top. It's a work in progress. So far I put a 2" leveling kit on her, 33x12.50's mounted on 15x10 wheels and bushwhacker fender flares. She had some rust in the rear wheels wells and rockers. I cut the rust out and welded new metal in. Paint is next.

I should probably finish my 3rz conversion but it's so hot and I'm not very motivated cause of all the projects I have going. Going to put it through it's paces at Rubicon next July so I should buckle down.

The very nice virgin Block made it to machinist today, should get it back next week with all new internals from Hastings
Everything will be decked and mated. Then it’s assembly time, every part attaching to this motor is new from 22reperformance.com just waiting on some heater hoses in the mail. New distributer and cam showed up from yota1 it is mated to the head with Jim’s 65lb springs and machined chromoly retainers. LC engineering intake and header all new sensors and replaced all bad connectors on the wiring harness new injectors pressure regulator fuel pump
    Couple more weeks to go.

Just replaced the chrome trim above the windows. Makes a huge difference. Added some 4Runner logos for the side pillars that look like they’re from the factory. Mechanically had all the seals in the engine replaced so it doesn’t leak everywhere anymore. New AC system since my old compressor started smoking!

Hey everyone, I rescued this 89 4runner minutes before it was on it's way to get crushed. It's beyond bringing back to life. I've taken a few things off for myself so far. Message me if you see something you may want. It was running as of 6 months ago. I don't have a key so I haven't tried to start it.

It lives. New motor is in and running great. Timing is set and no leaks drove it around all Day and took it on freeway last did second valve job with little
Movement and tightened head down second time no movement on head bolts either. I’ll do this again in a 100 miles. It sounds like a race car. Solid motor and tranny mounts are too much I need stock ones maybe.

I put out the fire in the inside fuse block. Just inside and above the driver's side kick panel. Bit of a shock to say the least. What caused it? Don't know yet. I'll let y'all know when I find out.
