What do people have for tires these days. Need new tires! 285s.

I wanted to get the red lettering version of the atx2 for the taco but they discontinued the red lettering. However, I think I will try a set from them either on the 4R or the taco. They seem to get good reviews just like yours.

 

This tire shop guy’s videos always pop up in my YouTube feed. He says that Nitto and Toyo are the best tires and best balancing.

Yes i see him all the time too on IG.
Seen him do everything from Atturo Trail blades, to Nitto, BFG, but havent ever seen a set of Generals. Yes he shows quite often that the Toyos take less weight than the others which would indicate they are the closest to round (least runout) and the closest to balanced straight off the delivery truck. These manufacturers spin the tires in their machines and the computers indicate how much runout they have and how much out of weight they are. This is what the red and yellow dots on the sidewalls of tires are. They indicate the lightest point (yellow) where you should mount your valve stem and what is the highest point (red) meaning most runout. These indicator marks are meant for the tire shop to mount the yellow dot at the valve stem and red dot at the low point in the wheels. I have only seen one shop in my life actually mount the yellow dot at the valve stem even though this should be simple normal every day life for the tire shop guys. When the tire flops onto the wheel, they could easily spin the tire around the line the marks up but alas..... They never do. This would help with the balancing, which is the sole purpose of the manufacturers testing the tires and marking them prior to shipping.
I have one of my 305/50-20 Generals on the wifes 4R with ZERO weight. I have another with only one or two small weights. Big difference in high quality tires and cheap tires. I had a set of Interco Thornbirds back in high school and i remember there being weights stacked on top of weights to the point they were almost hitting the brake caliper. I loved the way those things looked but hated the way they rode.

 

That’s why they are mounting tires instead of working in an office or hospital.

I love mine! They've been great tires, I got 80k miles from them too.

Unfortunately, like everything else, the price has gone way up, they used to be a lot cheaper than the KO2, now they're about the same price as the KO3s. I also wish they came in a few more sizes, I think that tread pattern in a 255 would be awesome.

Anyways I could not control my spending. Went to my local Discount Tire shop and ordered 2 sets of Nokian Outpost NAT tires.

Had Falken Rubitrek 285/70/17 SL installed on Sat. Super quiet and smooth on the highway. Loving them so far!

 

Dont be scared of LRE
I have 285 LRE General Grabber ATX and they have 127,000 miles in the pictures below, ride like a dream, and i get way better fuel mileage than most anyone could imagine. I get really good fuel mileage and the tires dont ride like bricks like some other manufacturers LRE tires. If you want a tire that will last forever, the General Grabber ATX in LRE would be the hot ticket. Its what i would recommend. These have been balanced twice, and rotated at that same mileage interval. There is 0.190" on the rear tire and 0.186" on the front tire. That works up to about 6/32
Everybody that gets them loves them. The Load Range E seem to last forever. In the excursion report he claims 1/32nd of wear in 7000 miles which would factor in about 100,000 miles on the excursion.

I have Grabbers on my old 4R and like them a lot, but for the 5th Gen last week I went with Bridgestone Accents. The 5th Gen sees very little off road/rugged use as I have the 2nd Gen to play with.
My two main priorities:
#1, 3-Peak rated to avoid chains in most cases. We live at 5K elevation.
#2, Quiet.
They are quieter and 2lbs lighter than the POS Oem Bridgestones but offer much better traction. The Accents have many innovative features.
My wife has a severe illness that will require many healthcare visits this coming winter and the 5th Gen will be called on regularly regardless of weather.

 

How did you manage to get 127K miles out of one set of tires? I have 121K miles on my 4Runner and it will be ready for its 4th set of tires soon.

 

They are great tires. Load Range E, and the rubber lasts longer than you can imagine. I got right at 75,000 miles on a set on my 2500 mega cab and it towed a big trailer every day of its life. These tires are legit, i am telling you, they are great tires. I drive the crap out of my daily, i go anywhere, i tow with it often, so the tires have not been babied. They just last. The rubber compound for the LRE must be harder than LRC and SL in order to last longer on heavier trucks. When you put this harder compound rubber tire on a light vehicle it just doesnt wear them out as fast. They are starting to crack between the treads but i am going to at least get 130,000 on them before i replace them just to say i did it.

 

It must be the hardest rubber compound ever used in a tire.

 

And the longest lasting tire in the history of tires.

I don’t think they’ve worn 0.030” in the past 30,000 miles. I should have been measuring with a caliper and recording wear vs miles. I didn’t expect them to last quite this long.

actually buy load E for once, Mickey Thompson or General Grabbers and you’ll find out
