I'm a former Frontier owner. Actually, I've owned 3 Nissan trucks (all of them great). The new 2022 looks really nice IMO, although it borrows very heavily from the Tacoma.

    3.8L V6
    310 HP
    281 ft/lb torque
    9 speed transmission
    18 city / 24 highway mpg

I won't be trading in the 4Runner or anything like that, but I think its a big step in the right direction for Nissan. What do you think?

Side profile heavily resembles the Tacoma. Could be great, never been a Nissan owner, but have friends who are and they say that Nissans quality has declined within the last decade. I know they had notorious issues with their radiators in the frontiers and xterras causing the transmission oil to leak into the coolant. A buddy had to get his transmission replaced 3 times because the radiator kept failing. Looks good though! If anything, more competition to Toyota, who really needs to amp up their development and take out the old cycling of the same vehicle lineup.

A definite improvement over the last offerings.

While I think it'll be a perfectly fine midsized truck, I don't think they did enough to take sales away from any of the other trucks. The only people I feel will buy this are diehard Nissan fans or people who can get these for cheaper than a Toyota who have 0 brand loyalty and don't see a Toyota as a perceived better truck.

Negative. Many taller people just don't fit in the Tacoma. It has a super weird seating position.

I've owned three Nissan trucks in the past. I expect this new Frontier to be excellent, and would 100% consider it if I needed a pickup.

One smart think that Nissan did was keep the dimensions the same. It's a true mid-size; not a wannabe full-size.

    Feel free to ask
The Frontier was way overdue for a complete overhaul. I do see a bit of taco resemblance, but I like what I’m seeing so far and would consider picking one up if I were in the market pending price and checking one out in person.

It looks good. And they're hoping beyond hope consumers think so. Because they've been bleeding billions in losses.

    Fingers crossed.

Wonder if they'll offer a manual, especially on the 4cyl.

Nissan and Toyota seems like they have had this competitive nature for a long time. Back when I had a '86 Toyota pickup, my brother-in-law goes and gets a Nissan pickup because they offered an engine with more horsepower. Toyota seemed to counter with something else and so on and...... ya. While it doesn't seem like a bad truck, some Toyota resemblance, I would be doing a bunch of 'research' on it before a purchase... IMO. I tend to put lots of 'research' time into purchases, that's just me.

Former Frontier owner myself, till this past Wednesday.

The radiator issue referenced was corrected in the 2011 model. Well known issue but long since fixed and thus only a question if buying an older, used truck.

Highway MPG rating was NOT 16 mpg (lol, bad but not THAT bad). 4WD model was 16/19 I believe? 2WD rated 20 or 21 highway, but yeah, not good by today’s standard though even a 2020 is rocking a 15+ year old drivetrain. Not drastically different than the outdated 4R’s engine/transmission combo.

If Nissan can undercut pricing of most of the competitors even a little, thus truck has serious potential. The Frontier has been the one consistent for Nissan (in large part because it hasn’t changed in 15 years, lol). They really can’t afford for it to be a miss. Styling has some Taco similarities but it’s really a bit more of following the trends. The tailgate for instance... every make seems to be doing a similar indent and the name model name. Love the aggressive front end. Love that they kept the dimensions largely the same (it’s on an updated but largely unchanged frame, only lengthened 5” while unchanged wheelbase).

it’ll be interesting with Ford having an entirely new Ranger on the way as well.

I’m in a 4R now myself not due to lack of faith in the Frontiers but needing the space more in SUV form than pickup. Best of all worlds to me.

This has been discussed heavily, the only option is the 3.8 V6. The front end is pleasing but, it's a Nissan; they just trying to catch some tailwind with this one.

The SMOD issue (trans fluid mixing with AF and killing the transmission) is a problem still. I had a 15 Xterra auto and while I never dealt with it, the forums were full of accounts of the issue on late model / post '11 trucks. I specifically sought out a tech at the dealership and asked him about it and he indicated that all the 4.0 engines were susceptible, no matter how new. Hopefully they changed this on the new engine.

Ah. This is actually first I've seen of the Fronty; I don't really follow what manufacturers are doing if I'm not in the market. Too bad. There's still a market for manual 4cyl trucks and Toyota isn't selling them anymore...

Curious, as that’s not the same on the Frontier forums and groups. I may be off on the year by a year, do believe it was ‘11, but Nissan changed the design to correct it with a bypass (at least in the Frontier... can’t vouch for the Xterra but don’t know why the same wouldn’t have occurred). Truly can’t recall a post of anyone with a confirmed SMOD issue with a ‘12+ model; it’s always the earlier models when folks have that strawberry milkshake picture and “am I in trouble?” post. Especially hate seeing it when someone says they got the used truck fairly recently.

Definitely with you on the lack of 4cyl. Really mind boggling to me that neither Toyota or Nissan are offering an optional power train at this point. Make the value truck.

I'd buy one of these over a 3rd gen Taco.

Good looking truck, but its 10 years too late. The D21 and the Toyota pickup were quite close in quality and reliability. Since then Toyota has pulled ahead and Nissan has reliability eroded quickly with all the issues. I would wait to see what issues crop up with the new powertrain. New Nissan products are a bit of a gamble, and everyone I know who owned one had tons of issues. I think its a good contender if all goes well though.

Too bad it has no manual option. I suspect next gen taco will follow the Nissan on that. The move to hybrids will be the end of the manual transmission. Nobody really wants a modern 4 cylinder truck. The tacos are too large for even a modern 4 cylinder (if it had any amount of power it would compromise reliability). The first gen tacos were small enough to feel spry with the smaller engine. A 4 cylinder sounds good in theory, but the increased size of modern pickups would make it a dog to drive.

Only Nissan experience I've ever had was a Maxima lease and that frigin thing drove and handled like it was on rails, very fun car to drive. I've looked at their models a few times when buying other things and always found Nissan to hold the closest to their stickers and not budge on the price. They would a little and it was buy the thing or not.

Probably wouldn’t buy one but that interior definitely was due for an update.
Also I believe they put the 2022 powertrain in the current 2020 model year?

I've had 2 Xterra's (1st gen, 2nd gen) and a '16 Frontier P4X. They were durable, trouble-free vehicles. Compared to a Colorado or Ranger, or even a Tacoma 2.5 gen this would be a much better choice.

It looks pretty nice to me but I've never owned a Nissan. Actually I've never been a fan of the brand. A friend of mine had owned 5 or 6 Nissans in a row. His Titan and Armada were pretty decent, the rest had one or more big ticket items that had to be replaced like the transmission. He's in Toyotas now and swears he will never go back.

The old frontier was always a no bullshit truck.

Taco is way too damn expensive.

I like my 2010 4x4 short cab Taco MT, but that’s been discontinued.

Former owner of 2017 Nissan Frontier 4 door long bed sv model. Stay away from Nissan vehicles. Customer service warranty department sucks. After 3 months and first rain water leaks through top side of windshield. Then at 20000 miles and 2 years of ownership roof started to crack on corners and shows sign of rust. It was 3 years or 36000 miles bumper to bumper warranty and after 6 visits and many complains to dealership and to Nissan consumer department they fixed the roof. Anyway this new Frontier to me looks copy and paste of last model Dodge Dakota. Piece of shit.

My Titan is going on 200k with zero issues. Once this dies I’ll be buying the new frontier (picking up my TRD pro 4Runner in a couple weeks!)

I personally think the new frontier is THE best looking truck out there. I’m military and every soldier has one of 4 cars- Tacoma, jeep, charger, or mustang…. Im tired of seeing tacomas honestly. I’ve had great experience with my Nissan Titan, and all the truck reviewers seem to like the new frontier.
