Ok, on 4 Runner forum, you’d expect one answer - right? And, that’s the case with me. I’m an old guy and I’ve owned a lot of vehicles and maybe it’s a reflection of my working class roots, and all the old fixer uppers I’ve owned, but my current ORP is by far the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’ve driven 4x4s all my life, going back a long way and no manufacturer can equal a 4 Runner in combining high speed driveability and 4x4 capability IMHO, especially the 5th Gen.

    a few goodies
I've had several very good cars. The most reliable was a 79 Toyota pickup, I guess a HiLux? That truck took everything I could dish out and it kept running. It hauled me and my dirt bike all over the Sierras around Yosemite. That truck never let me down. I don't remember anything ever breaking on it either. Not even the usual stuff, alternator or starter or whatever.
I had two Oldsmobile Cutlasses that were fantastic and reliable - comfortable too. In 2007 I bought an Infiniti G-35-6MT that was a real hot rod. Fun to drive on unless stuck in traffic... I thought that was my best car - until I bought my 2019 4Runner TRD ORP. What a vehicle. All the goodies. Makes my 2012 Tacoma Access Cab Sport look a bit run of the mill. I traded that truck for a 2015 Tacoma AC Sport - the last good year for the Tacoma. The 2012 was absolutely scary in a panic stop, it just kept going and going. When I saw the 2015 has a brake booster system I got rid of the 2012 as soon as I could. But the 2015 is still noisy inside, and like the 2012 the kazoo noise from the driver side window leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I still have the Tacoma as it is the daily driver. But when I get home, it is the 4Runner that I get in and drive if I'm going anywhere else.

My 2003 SR5 was an absolute rock. I neglected it severely, and it got me all over the place safely. At 257K miles, it was on it's second battery, original alternator and starter. The 2019 has been excellent so far, aside from the front differential (needle bearing). I can't say for another 10-15 years whether it will hold up to the '03. But, I have modified this one so I would have to make exceptions for the parts I'm putting extra strain on. Plus, I never off-roaded the '03 (though I did drive it like I stole it).

And, I like @HornedOwl 's idea of adding what was your favorite car/wish you still had it. For me, that would be my '85 Supra.

It's a toss-up between 4 vehicles I've owned. The current 4R is definitely comfortable, off-road capable, and great on the highway. My 2013 Tacoma 4x4 TRD was close, and I never had one issue with it in the 6 years I owned it since buying it new in 2013 and selling it last year. I also had a 2002 Tacoma 4x4 TRD that was a great little truck, and do wish I had kept that one. Then there was my first new car, a 1973 VW Super Beetle. I loved that car. I only sold it 'cause my wife was pregnant with our first child, and needed a car with AC...that car never gave me an issue once. $2,195.00 brand new. I didn't have much money in 1973, but the payment was only $66/mo for 3 years. :)

technically, our best cars belonged to my wife so far, but my name is always on the title... It's a toss up among two Siennas (a 2004 and a 2014) and a '97 Camry. Probably the '04 Sienna. Drove it for 9 years and 214,000 miles. Total of $250.00 on repairs (rounding up) for an AC relay and a door actuator that croaked. only traded it because wifey wanted the cool Salsa Red color on the '14. I drove Chevy Blazers and Trailblazers for most of my adult life (Dad was a Chevy guy...they must have been good back in the 40's-90's...) but after a while I was always replacing parts. finally wised up and bought a 4Runner last year....I suspect that's going to be my new favorite.

When I see "best" I think "best at what?" With that qualifier:

My current 4Runner feels like it could end up being "best overall." But I have less than 4000 miles on it so it's too early to make that judgement.

The car that made me smile the most when driving it? Probably my 2015 VW GTI. Though my dad's 1985 Supra was up there. Also his 1973 MGB. Also my 2009 BMW 328i with Sport package.

The car that made me smile the most when listening to it? The 2009 BMW 328i. That engine was so sweet!

The car that made me smile the most when looking at it? My 2016 BMW M235i. That was the most expensive car I'd ever bought, by a large margin, and it looked special and was so special in so many ways. Too bad the steering was numb (unlike the brilliant steering feel of older BMWs). And the fake engine noise through the stereo system was a constant source of embarrassment. I was embarrassed for BMW, and kinda embarrassed to own something that did that. Likewise with the highly programmed exhaust overrun burbles. Gimmicky. Tacky.

The car I was proudest to own? Maybe the 1990 Honda Civic hatchback that was my first new-car purchase. Fun car to drive. With a sense of quality and precision, especially engine precision, that was incredible for the price. I'd thought the M235i would be my proudest car, but the flaws mentioned above soured it for me.

The car I'd most like to have back? That may actually be one of my wife's cars. She had a 2013 Subaru BRZ. I loved that car but she didn't and got rid of it way before its time.

The car that I'd consider my Best Car Ever, if I could get one now? Maybe a mint condition Porsche Cayman, manual trans, from the last year of the flat six -- before they switched to a turbo 4.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
My first car was a 1983 Ford Fairmont, 21 years old, when I was in high school. It's because of that car that I can say that I used to drive a fox body

We have not had the 4runner long enough to say it is the best yet. We have a 2007 Toyota Corolla that be bought new and by far it has been the most reliable, fun car we have ever owned. We have gone on long trips on that car and it still gets 38 MPG on the road and I don't baby that car either. First Toyota we have ever owned, because of the reliability of that car is a big reason why we purchased the 4runner instead of something else.

That’s quite a review, Singleminded! Thanks. You mentioned MGB, it’s amazing how good they are for a cheap basic car. Really fun to drive, although a little vulnerable on today’s roads. But still fun to drive.

My best is of course my 4Runner after all I have owned it since 1994 so it must be good especially since it has been mostly trouble free.

While my 2019 OR is a very close second, my 94 Miata is the cheapest, most reliable, most fun car I could ever imagine owning. It’s as close to a pure driving machine that I’ve ever driven. It’s like having an old roadster (MG, Sprite, Triumph, Alph), that doesn't spend more time in the garage than on the road.

At the time I buy it, every car is the best car!

Also, time reveals things through rose colored glasses; minor niggles are forgotten.

That said, upon some reflection, I think my 2009 Honda Civic 2 dr EX manual was "the best". I had it for 120,000 trouble free miles. Oil changes and tires, that was it. I never got bored with it, it was close enough to sporty that it was fun to drive, but good on gas, looked great, comfortable... it saw me through 2 long distance jobs, moving, lots of life events. It pulled my dirt bike with a light trailer to weekend events. It really was the only car I've owned, 4R included, that I haven't thought about selling after I'd owned it for a while.

It was totaled when a woman in cardiac arrest came off the road in a Dodge truck and hit it in a parking lot. That story actually gets super crazy, but not the point of the thread...

LOL, you can tell I like cars. Yes, the MGB is crazy small, especially on today's SUV-dominated roads. Back then there were a lot more sports cars and compact econo cars so it wasn't as out of place. But the main thing about it -- and you can see this bias in my list -- is it was pure analog. Like Good2Bpickle said above about his 94 Miatia, a pure driving machine. Manual steering. Manual trans. No computer gizmos at all. Shit, it didn't even have EFI.

I soooo miss those days. Almost everything now is like playing a video game. The steering feels as disconnected from the front wheels as an XBox controller is from the things on the tv screen. Computers steer for you, even brake for you (sometimes when they shouldn't!) Suspension damping is computer controlled. You can adjust how heavy or light the steering feels. Even gauges are often just computer images now. We've lost so much from all of that.

My 2009 328i proved that you can have one, fully mechanical suspension set up that's perfect -- like a sports car when you want it to be, or commuter comfortable when you need it to be. So few cars deliver that now.

This is actually the thing I fear most from electric cars. There's nothing inherent to electric propulsion that prevents it from delivering an analog driving experience (though of course you'll never get real ICE or exhaust sound, which can have lot of emotional punch). But there's no reason you can't have a battery powered electric motor and still have everything else be fully mechanical, including the steering, suspension and gauges. Shit, you don't even need power steering. Indeed, you may need it less than now because an EV doesn't need to put as much weight over the front wheels.

This is why the EV retro-mod trend is so exciting. With a big breakthrough in battery tech, we could have "crate" EV powertrains to convert most of older ICE vehicles, retain their mechanical steering and suspension, and still produce decent range.

But of course, in practice EVs from the big automakers are likely to accelerate this trend to computer controlled everything. It's too bad.

In High School I worked enough to buy my self a 1974 Ford Courier pickup, which was made by Mazda. That little truck with the Mazda engine was indestructible. Got me thru High School and then some.

Very intriguing question. I have owned many vehicles for many different purposes.
The one I wish I held onto that also brought an amazing smile to me was my pearl white '87 Supra turbo. I bought It from the original owner & it was completely stock. I had all the work done. It had T-tops & a 5spd manual.
I had an intake, turbo back 3" HKS exhaust, blowoff valve, new head gasket (known problem), I lowered it 2" rear & 1" front. Eibach springs & whatever shocks worked with the active suspension that came from the factory.
I was offered to buy it back (as I requested to the buyer) but couldn't pull @ the time.
I sold it in 2005 & it was never driven in the snow & was immaculate.
    Now I wanna cry...

First year they offered a turbo! I drove one once at a dealership in Milwaukee. If I would get any Supra ever again, a 3rd gen with a 1jz swap would be my 1st choice. They were like a luxury sports car.

The 7m was also a pretty strong motor aside from Toyota using the wrong torque spec for the head bolts.

    Got any pictures? ;)

Thought some pics would be cool.

this is what the 85 Supra looked like. Love that color.

After that is the 2009 328i. Not a great pic, and didn't like the color combo inside or out, but what a great car to drive. Again, proving a car can be brilliant without a lot of electronic gizmos.

Then there's the 16 M235i. Too bad about that numb steering etc. Engine torque curve was fab and marvelously smooth (though still not as sweet as the NA straight six in the 328i).

Then for laughs, this is what my very first car looked like. 1977 Pontiac LeMans Safari wagon. Gift from a family friend.

And while we're at it, this is what the first car I ever bought looked like. Paid $250 and it only had 74K on it. 1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme.

I wish I had digital pictures of all of my cars! My Supra was a kind of blue-ish gray-ish color, but no beauty queen. MR2 was red faded to chalky orange. I still love the color of my '03 4runner, phantom gray pearl. It was similar to MGM, but no metallic. It actually looked best on overcast days.

That is a nice color. I’ve had a few cars that looked best when it was overcast. The 328 was like that. Made the bronze look a warm silver. Otherwise it looked beige-gold. Yuck.

I so wish I had more orig pics too. The Supra, Pontiac and Olds pics are from the internet. That’s what I meant when I said these are what my cars looked like. Alas they are not the actual cars I had. Have no pics of any kind of those cars :(

Aha! In that case, my Supra looked like this:

I love the long hood on these. Such beautiful cars!
