Hey all, Im a proud owner of a 98 SR5 4runner as of this past month! Just thought Id share something that Ive noticed now that Ive worked at a Toyota dealership for a couple months now.

Anyways, I work inventory control, and have noticed a trend with what people trade in. Its funny, because some car makes seem rarely traded in, or certain models at least. We never see Porsche, for example. Yet, certain brands or models seem quite common to where it makes me wonder if theyre crap cars (some of which I know are junk and often go to auction even with low mileage!).

Ive noticed that Chevys seem to be the most common trade in, along with Nissans and Hondas. Now, some of this might just be due to them simply being quite common vehicles. But even though we get some Fords in, we dont get quite as many. So Im left wondering...

For example of junk, we've gotten a handful of Chevy Cruzes traded in since Ive been here, and every single one of those has gone to auction due to having some expensive issue or another. Regardless of low mileage; its crazy. Its gotten to the point to where the used car sales manager is about done accepting them for trade ins lol.

Has anybody else noticed any unique trends such as this? Or have any thoughts on the brands I mentioned, or other brands or models in general? Whether junk, or just commonly traded in for Toyotas in general?

Would love to hear your guys thoughts!

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. POS. Traded it in and never looked back. Only had 90k miles on it and more problems than I could count.

The strangest of which was the seat detached from the floor mounts. The four pieces of metal snapped off over the course of a few weeks. Completely off and sliding around the cab. When I took it to the shop in Detroit they said they actually see it fairly often. WTF. So dangerous.

My 2007 4runner was purchased new at the time and has been the best vehicle Ive ever owned. First Toyota, first foreign vehicle.

You only see so may Honda's because there's so many out there not because their a POS. I also have two Honda's in the family so maybe I'm bias but the brand certainly speaks for itself. Just count how many Accords you drive by in a day - my god! Far as Porsche's go your either a 4R driver or your not. I'd have to agree not many Carrera drivers get up one morning and decide their going to go trade for a SUV and even if they did it would probably be within the same manufacturer.

I saw an 94 Accord Wagon last week in S. Charlotte with two 20 something dudes driving it. I had to talk to them. I hadnt seen one in a long time. Had over 300000 miles, and a new transmission. Guy said he had been searching for one and is in love with it. They are great cars. Go forever.

Oh absolutely, I cant keep count of how many I drive by in a given day! Ive had a civic myself and is still going to this day as my mother drives it as she needs. Those are an example of one Id say is just common, not junkers. Just funny how many people Ive noticed trade in their old Honda for a Toyota vehicle instead of getting another Honda. Im sure Honda isnt losing any sleep over it though!

Funny thing - we recently had someone trade in a 2016 Mercedes E400 with only 14k miles. What they traded in for...a 2019 T4R!

I can totally understand that. I traded in a 2018 BMW with 500 miles on it on my 4Runner.

I don't even remember the year(s) on anything but when we first went to Toyota I traded in my Chevy ZR2 (actually liked that thing). Then traded in the POS Saab of my wife's. Saab's were awesome before GM got them.

Went with Tacoma for me and Rav4 for the wife. Now have Tundra and 4Runner.

My first new vehicle was a 2002 Tundra, traded in a ‘96 Yukon. I got laid off from my job shortly after getting the Tundra, so I was forced to sell it, otherwise, I might still be driving that now.

My second new vehicle was a ‘12 Tundra CrewMax (lots of vehicles between the two Tundras) no trade in, but I had a 2001 Volvo V70XC that went to a family member. Traded in a 2014 Focus ST for a 2015 Taco...traded in the Taco for the 4Runner.

@ktrain78 We have a bunch of Chevy Cruze's as fleet vehicles at my job and they are TERRIBLE. so slow. but at least they are small and you can park them anywhere in the city haha.

i traded in a 2005 saturn vue for a 2012 4R TE. i bought the vue because i had an outback prior to that and it shit the bed very unexpectedly so i had to get a new ride quick. friend of a friend was selling it and got a really great deal on it. it was in great shape and i wanted an suv anyway, depsite it not being at the very least all wheel drive. it did me very very well, including driving from north jersey to almost delaware in a severe snow storm. i miss it on occassion, but mostly in a nostalgic manner. but i wanted a 4x4 suv with towing capacity because i had gotten a boat, so i traded it in for the 4R. obviously a great decision!

the other day someone posted a video on facebook of a guy driving a blue Vue on I-76 in Philly with two blown out right side tires and i really wished it was my old one, but it wasnt haha.

We traded in our 2017 Hyundai Tucson for our 2019 4Runner. We loved the Tucson, never had a problem. It was one of many Hyundai's we'd leased through the years. We just wanted something that could get us lost in the mountains and manage to hold camping gear along with two dogs (one is 50 pounds and one is 150 pounds). The 4Runner ticked all of our boxes! No regrets but I do miss many things about the Tucson.

Fuck yeah. I bought a 20 year old Honda mower in Detroit for $200. Used it 7 years and sold it still running for $225. Turned around and bought another one here in Charlotte. They go FOREVER if you take care of em. Love my lil Honda.

I turned in a slightly modified (intake, charge pipes, full exhaust, intercooler, tune, coil overs, wheels/tires, sway bars) MK6 GTI for my 4Runner. The GTI was great in the Midwest, not so much for how I used it once we moved to the mountains.

I traded in a 2006 300C SRT8 to Carmax with a little over 100k on the clock. I sure do miss that big V8! But, alas, I couldnt drive that car on the beach or on the trails, lol. Replaced it with a 2021 ORP in MGM. [IMG]

Traded in two 2019 RAV4's for one 2021 4Runner, due to not being able to get up my mountain driveway last winter due to low ground clearance, even though we had installed Adventure Package Falken Tires on them. Got good trade in prices on both RAV's with very low mileage.

Traded in my 2010 FJ Cruiser that I bought new in 2010 and accumulated 161,000K over 11 years. Best vehicle I've ever owned.
Never had to do anything but regular maintenance. Received over 50% of what I paid new for a trade-in on my current 2021 4Runner TRD/OR PREMIUM/MR. No regrets. But do sort of miss the simplicity of the FJ. I noticed my FJ was on the dealer's pre-owned lot less than a week. It was in very good mechanical and cosmetic condition. And had the Factory off-road lights.
