In another thread titled something like “Blackstone Oil Analysis”, I mentioned I had stumbled on to what I thought was a steal of a deal on a clean 2018 Nissan Rogue.

The Rogue has suddenly gone bye bye. One of my wife’s coworkers was telling my wife that their young daughter was looking for a car but not finding anything affordable that was decent.

My wife and I talked about it and decided to ask them if they would be interested in this Rogue. Well they came out to look at it and drove it. They liked it. I was up front with the husband and told him what I paid for it, told him it for sure needed new tires, and that I had learned that the transmissions on these things were suspect. But hell, I don’t know- the thing sure seems good to me- runs and drives very smooth. But, the husband said he was aware of the bad rap the Nissan transmissions have, but that he was willing to give this one a chance. So I said ok, sold as is then. Lol. He said he would have the transmission serviced. I told him it may be best to “just leave a sleeping dog lay” regarding that, explaining to him that I’ve had two transmissions “serviced” in my driving days- one was a GM vehicle, and the other a Ford. BOTH of those trans went bad on me shortly after having them professionally “serviced”. So, who knows.

I ended up selling the Rogue to them for $600.00 less than what I recently paid for it- I told the husband that would help make up for the cost of a new set of tires. Oh well.

And so ends my idea of having a beater car. lol. I hope that thing lasts a while for their daughter. Hopefully it will. I see plenty of these things of this vintage still running around out on the roads around here.

600 bucks?!? Is the Rogue’s reputation that bad? Lol. That thing looks mint.

Wouldn’t surprise me if that car will be on the road for a long time. Something about beaters…when title and registration costs as much as the vehicle, it just makes one want to hold on to it as long as it rolls. Even if you’re only filling it up 1/4 tank at a time to avoid wasting money on extra gas in the tank when it finally craps out lol

About 4 or 5 years I got a 2006 Mazda Tribute AWD from the in laws. Super low miles and manual stick shift! Always garaged, but rarely got the salt washed off. Total mess underneath with rust, and absolutely everything leaked. Every. Single. Thing.

But I taught two of the kids how to drive stick shift in the car, and one is still using it as a daily. My youngest even changed the brakes on it when they were learning brakes in his automotive class. As much as he doesn’t “care” about that car, I think he bonded with it. And he does enjoy driving stick, so I feel good I passed down that skill (maybe the last generation?)

It still leaks, but it drives. It already marked it’s territory on the driveway, so we’ll keep it around as long as it can give service and has a purpose. Long live the beater!

Be happy you got rid of it. My GF has a 2013 Rogue and it needs a new CVT. First shop I called quoted $10k lmao.

Newer JATCO CVTs are definitely better, heck, even garbage examples can shine like a 2010's Sonata that hasn't seen the engine blow or an old coworker's Altima with 160k original transmission miles and counting. (it's been years though, who knows if it's still around)

That said, I also know other folks who's HyunKia engine's have blown/gotten stolen, Sentra needed a new CVT, etc.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I'm guessing no one randomly left a note on this vehicle asking to buy it?

It’s got a cvt? Ok, that answers my question about its reputation. I can accept a Nissan as a beater, but a nissan with a CVT is getting to be a risk, once you factor in how much how much money you have to pay for title, registration, and a tank of gas. Unless the tank is full, then…maybe…lol

Especially that "last generation" part. My co-worker has a son starting to drive so he got a car to learn stick. The son mastered the skill but he really doesn't care for it... I find it odd on the surface but then on the other hand I don't give shit about the intricacies of how computers and phones work so I guess it's the same thing, different tool.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 35 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 35yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
