I took an ammo box and drilled out holes that matched some bolts in the empty engine compartment area on the passenger side. You may need a metric 10 nut/bolt. The bungee stabilizes and secures the box. I now have some tools I might not have taken otherwise. Kevin

Assuming that box can withstand the heat, that's a great idea.

When i had the Viper Truck those boxes where called burrito warmers, and they were made out of aluminum.

Good idea if you think all the tools you would need fit into that little box.

I appreciate your creativity, but I don't get it.

You've got a huge cargo area in the back where you could stuff a body if necessary. Why bother with a smallish box that can hold only a few hand tools. Not to mention that you're driving a Toyota, not a 86' Hyundai Pony. Chances of you needing any tools are low.

On the other hand, that would be a perfect place for storing valuables or a handgun if you're going to be away from the vehicle for some time and need to leave valuables inside. No one would think to look under the hood, and would need to break into the vehicle to pop open the hood.

Boy, 40 years ago I remember my dad having an ammo can bolted to the inner fender on our 72 Chevy Blazer.

Maybe it could hold a quart of oil, some brake fluid, power steering fluid. If that doesn’t work for you, then like i said, burrito warmer.

I could store even more illegal drugs and rubbers in there.

Funny comment, 'cause I've never see a cop pop a hood during a search. Cab and trunk, but never the hood.
    Except for Customs, that is...

Nice use of that dead space. Along with hand tools in several big tool rolls, I carry shackles and straps, lights & flares, tape, electric & baling wire etc and hefty jumpers and other stuff. I think I prefer an easier access place for the tools, but the recovery gear and jumpers which don't get used often would go nicely up there in a suitable box. I'm always accessing tools, but rarely for working on my own rig.

that really is a cool idea, but I don't hear about 4Runner owners needing tools very often. Now my Blazer... needs all the backup it can get, Lol!

I like it! As mentioned, it needs to stand up to some heat. But, aside from a second battery, there's really nothing else to do with that space.

For a basic set of tools, specific to the 4runner, I think there's probably enough room in that box. It would be perfect for things that you always want to keep in the vehicle, without getting in the way.

Sure, the 4runner has plenty of cargo space. But, why not take advantage of a dead space under the hood?

I might copy this. Or, do something similar.

I've been thinking of doing something similar. But I want to use a metal box. I want to use it to heat my lunch. That is for sure one thing I miss about my jeep. The manifold was perfect for holding frozen burritos and hamburgers wrapped in foil. You could just wedge them in and they never moved and by the time we got to a lunch stop/break my food was ready.
