    Hello,

Just wanted to share a fix I found online that pretty much eliminating the dreadful drone of the TRD Pro exhaust.

When I first bought my new 4R I loved everything about it and then came the 1.5 hour drive home. If there was something that ruined it for me was the exhaust note when on the highway at about 60MPH/100KPH. I was at odds about how to cure it. Do I replace the exhaust with OEM, weld in a different muffler, try an aftermarket exhaust that claims to not have any drone.

After owning it for a year, I came across I think it was a Reddit thread where someone talked about welding in an exhaust cone. ZZP 2.5" Exhaust Cone Insert Sound Reducer – ZZPerformance Well I thought for a fraction of the price of any of the other options, I would give it a go. All in from the US, it cost about $120 CAD.

On the day FedEx delivered it to my house I was a bit skeptical but I went out and put it in the tailpipe opening. It took a bit to get it to stay in place with the set screw. I knew it wouldn't be secured like this permanently but wanted to just try it until I could get it tacked by a welder.

Once in place, I started the truck. It still had a deeper exhaust note so I wasn't sure. Well, to my surprise after a few good rides around town, to work, and even a few trips on the highway, that drone was pretty much gone.

If anyone is in this same situation, I do recommend this 100%.

So you put it in the exhaust tip?

I wonder if this adds restriction.

@hossler1788 , yup it goes in from the exhaust tip. I'll take a pic when I get home and post it.

@whippersnapper02 , I'm sure it does. It's still early but I haven't seen a significant, if any, drop in fuel economy nor does it sound like the engine is exhausting through a straw.

My family is headed on a 30+ total hour trip in August. I might try it out to make the wife happier on the drive lol.

    Thanks for the review @Abrisebois

I currently have the OEM non TRD mid pipe with the pro side exit.
I’ll be curious to try this db killer though with the stock pro set up. If I can keep the way it sounds without the drone I might put it back.
    For $50 it’s definitely worth a try.

I wonder as well, and if it would cause the truck to run lean. Maybe it can be adjusted in the tune. I wonder if the folks at OTT have any input on this @JustDSM @BortisYeltzen

A cat-back exhaust will not require any specific edits to the calibration.

It's weird because I read about all this drone with the TRD oem exhaust and I kind of feared it before going to pick up my truck. After driving it for over 3 years now I can't say I've experienced much drone at all and I do drive on the highway often enough to notice it. Perhaps they did something different to the exhausts up here for the Canadian market?

I would agree. I have actually enjoyed the exhaust on my Pro. Right at 8,000 miles. I can hear some exhaust tone but it’s nowhere near what I would call drone where it hits an obnoxious resonance frequency and beats your ear drums. But I came from LS1 motors with long tube headers. Lol.

This is just a resonator TBH. It reduces and restricts a bit more of the flow, it should work. It is funny to see this shape because in my industry (O&G), we call this a witches Hat Strainer - https://www.camlock-fittings.com/witches-hat-strainer.html. A different purpose of course but similar look.

In the original Beverly Hills Cop movie, Axle putting the banana in the tailpipe caused some problems. So there is a datapoint for you…

Reality is a cat back exhaust isn’t going to move the needle one way or another, you’re just playing with how much noise you want.
