I would like to tow a travel trailer with a 2021 ORP.

Yes, I know a Tundra would tow better. A Tundra would not fit in my garage, and I prefer the 4Runner for the 350 days a year that it would not be hooked to a trailer. I plan to use a weight distribution hitch with anti-sway and a brake controller.

All that being said, two trailer options have risen to the top of the heap.

Option 1: 3100 lbs dry weight, 350 lbs hitch weight, single axle, 90" wide
Option 2: 3800 lbs dry weight, 520 lbs hitch weight, double axle, 96" wide

We do not plan to add much cargo or fill the water tank to tow. We will not be towing in the mountains.

    A few questions:

Is it worth the extra weight to get the stability of the double axle of option 2?
Is the hitch weight a problem on option 2?
If the hitch weight is a problem on option 2, would a weight distributing hitch help with that?
Does anyone have experience towing something similar to either of these with a 5th gen?

May not be what you want to hear, but if I was planning on towing a 3000lb trailer, I wouldn’t be buying a 4runner. They barely tow worth a shit for a 1500lb trailer

As I said in the post, I know it's not a Tundra. I'm looking to tow 80% or less of the capacity in the specs, which is clearly within the capabilities of the vehicle. I'm not expecting great mileage or high speeds.

Does anyone have answers to the actual questions?

The 4Runner is only rated for 500# hitch weight. I would definitely go with option #1.

There are a few threads about towing travel trailers.

You'll want a WD hitch, and brake controller.

Also, tow in S4 and keep it under 65 and you'll be much happier.

    You're welcome!

Some have recommendations for brake controllers and hitches, which is nice.

I think you'll be fine, as long as you're not in a hurry while towing. :D
