I need to replace my transmission. I found one with decent miles on it at a good price. I have been told that I need a transmission that has "Federal / Canada emissions in it."

The one I'm looking at says, "CALIFORNIA & FEDERAL TRANSMISSIONS"

Will this fit my car? IS there a difference? I'm unfamiliar with things labeled California.

California had more stringent emissions standards than the rest of the US. California-spec 4Runners had more emissions-related equipment than Fed-spec 4Rs. The transmissions are the same outside of the dipstick tube (Cali-spec routes past an extra cat), swap the dipstick tube from your busted trans to the new one.

However, years on transmissions matter. 96-00 trannys are a direct swap, 01-02 will not work, as they have a different shift mechanism.

Assuming you have a 4x4 v6. From 96-00, there are different transfer cases and pumps between the models and years but that shouldn’t be an issue, as the transmissions dimensions are the same.

Thank you for this information! Much appreciated. I want to get my car back on the road.
