I have 150,000 miles on my 2017 Toyota 4Runner SR5. I want to change the rear and front differential fluid and the transfer case fluid. I just about had my mind made up on putting Redline 75W85 SL5 in all 3 after way too many hours of research. Then I found two places that suggested redline 75w75 SL4 for the transfer case. It states on the bottle that’s recommended for “TOYOTA/SCION MANUAL TRANSMISSION GEAR OIL LV” I’d appreciate y’all’s thoughts on this. Since I’ve started modifying my 4Runner I spent hours on this forum, reading y’all’s advice. Thanks in advance.

Any off the shelf 75/90 gear lube will work just fine.

75W-90 front and rear, and it can also go in the transfer case. (I went with Redline MT-LV for the transfer case personally and there will be opinions that vary.)

Edit: I used the Valvoline bagged 75W-90 but that was what was available to me, I'd have used Supertech gear oil instead if I found it that day.

I did the same as above, Redline 75w-90 in the front and rear diffs with MT-LV in the TC.

Redline MT-LV in the TC but use Valvoline 75w-90 in the front and rear diffs only because the Valvoline bags are so easy to use vs pumping the Redline from the bottle…

    Cheers,

75W85 for diffs and MT LV for transfer case. Don't think too much on it.

I prefer Redline, so bought a bottle pump for $8 to use with the bottles.

I just did this exact job and I can give you all the part numbers when I’m back home. But, I can tell you:

I did OEM Diff fluid, and Transfer case fluid.
The rear diff uses the same washers for drain and fill, and front diff uses that same washers for fill. Front diff drain uses a unique bronze colored large washer. The transfer case uses its own washer not shared with diffs, for both drain and fill.

I recommend using goggles. I also recommend always removing the fill bolt prior to the drain bolt. If you remove the drain bolt and then can’t remove the fill bolt. You’re screwed.

Use goggles, the little hose you’re pumping with can slip out and you can accidentally pump to your face because there’s a lot of pumping and you may not notice.

It could potentially get messy, use a cardboard.

Use a torque wrench, don’t damage your precious cases.

MT LV is the right substitution is the general consensus of the replies. No one opposes the idea of using it. A few opinions that it’s not necessary.MT LV it is!! I’ll report back after the next change with my opinion. Thanks to everyone who replied. I really appreciate the input.

For what it’s worth, I used the 75W-90 Valvoline in the bags as well. Not having to deal with any kind of fluid pump or plastic bottles makes the job a ton easier.

I stressed out about gear oil at first, and used to search out and buy Toyota’s 75W then Redline MT-LV for the transfer case. Then I read that 75W-90 is OK in front, rear, and transfer case.

Now I use Valvoline synthetic 75W-90 in the squeeze bags. As others have said, it’s easier and less messy. Six bags will do all three.
