Heading out to Palm desert with the wife and kids this weekend, anyone got any easy/moderate trails around that area? It’s just us so nothing too wild as I don’t want to risk getting in a pickle. Thanks!

I grew up out there and went to college in 2004 and never looked back. The desert used to be wide open out there, I had a mostly stock Ranger 4x4 and drove it in the dirt as much as on the road but that isn't the case anymore (as I understand it, I really don't go home much anymore), however, I do believe the Berdoo Canyon Trail is still open and you end up in Joshua Tree. I used to take this route up into Joshua Tree and then drive the roads back down and around. I haven't done this trail since 2004.

Berdoo is the one I keep hearing of. I think this will be the one to do. Would you say its more on the easy or moderate side? Any rock crawling?

When I did it almost 20 years ago, it was very easy with one spot that was a little tricky but I had no problems with it in my Ranger. I don't think I used 4x4 when I did it, although I rarely use 4x4 in my vehicles. I use it as my back up plan. The all trails reviews have some pictures of non modified vehicles going through it recently. I think you should be good. I bet you will see other vehicles out there too, so even if you got into trouble, you won't be stuck alone.

Another option would be to drive up highway 74 (incredible view up top) and find a trail near Pinyon Flats. I don't know the trails up there that well but it is "mountainy" up there vs. desert.

Little rock Dam used to be a good place and very close to Palmdale. There's also that great dried fruit and Nut market up the road. It's been 15+ years though since I've been there.

Palmdale is 2.5 hours away from Palm Desert.
