My 4Runner was running smooth yesterday. Today after work I started it up and noticed the trac off light and engine light blinking. And running roughlike missing cylinders. Does anyone know what could cause this, and I apologize if this has been asked many times before. It's a 2018 4.0 with just under 40K. Thank you all for any info.

Flashing CEL means active misfire. More than likely rodent damage of the injector wiring. Happened to me when my 19 was 2 years old. Comprehensive coverage of your insurance will cover it.

@whippersnapper02 is correct on all accounts (cause and insurance coverage).

    Same experience last week.

I do not see any damage to the wiring. my comprehehensive probably would not cover that anyway. It went from running perfect to total crap in a day

Get a reader that can show you the codes. I bet you have either a rich or lean condition that is giving you the symptoms you are describing.

It has to be something that could immediately happen. It was not a problem that has been around . It happened basically overnight. That is what is making me think could it be the gas I bought over the weekend. Or something else. the gas cap I checked. I just don't know

The injector wiring is underneath the upper intake manifold. Not easy to see unless you peek under it. I just happen to see copper showing through the front.

If it is drivable go to autozone or your local auto store and ask them to put it on their scanner and see what codes it will give you. It could be bad gas or debris going in. The scanner might allow you to clear the condition and the rough idle will go away, most of the time. Try that. If not the stealership. Take pics of the engine bay...from the filter thru the throttle and see if anyone here spots something.

Hang in there bud. I dont think there is anything bad that could have happened overnight on a 40K mile 4R. My money is on bad gas, a chunk of debris....or some vacuum leak in the intake area. Check all the injection lines and see if you smell gas or something.

Good luck on this. I would go ahead and buy those very sticky rat/mouse adhesive trays, from Lowe's or whomever and place a couple of them in the engine compartment. A dab of peanut butter, in the center and tape them down so the critter can't get the adhesive on important parts under there.

40K is way too soon for an ignition coil to be going out, and "bad gas" is IMO pretty hard to find these days. Don't forget to check inside the air cleaner assembly.

If you see any wiring damage, immediately go find peppermint oil and spray it all throughout the engine bay. It works, I have real-world proof.

Mice is likely the culprit. Vacuum leak or a flaky crank sensor would trigger other codes, not this one. Remove the intake manifold and look carefully underneath or use a borescope. A dealer would tell you to replace the engine harness at a cost of say $6k (hence the mentioning of insurance). If fixing it yourself, you can use crimp & seal connectors. Spare fuel injector pigtails are available for cheap as well.

I just noticed that there are multiple codes. P0020 'A' camshaft position actuator 'A' control circuit open bank 2
    P0302 Cyl. 2 misfire
    P0304 Cyl. 4 misfire

All of this happened like overnight. She was running smooth as normal on Sunday. I started it up Monday afternoon and lights were flashing and running rough.

FYI, I had the rodent-chewed ignition wire happen a couple of weeks into ownership new off the lot. I'm convinced it happened enroute from Japan to CA, or CA to ABQ, as the droppings, most likely mouse, were pretty old and dried out.

Just like you, it was fine one day, then next day driving to Durango, CO the lights came on and the engine started running crappy. I pulled over, let it sit for a while, then tried to start it up, and when I did, all was well again. I was faced with returning to ABQ or continuing on to Durango (which I ultimately did), and good thing...we got to a Toyota dealership in Durango, and although it was near quitting time, they had a tech there that was willing to stay and look at it. He found the chewed wire. When discussing the fix and how to get it paid for, the tech and dealership gave us a great gift since we were out of town and stranded - the tech fixed it and they didn't charge us for it!

I subsequently got some spray for the engine compartment, no issues since. You have to pull off the air filter box and the resonator housing in order to really be able to inspect the passenger side injector wiring.

    Good luck with the fix.

I'm not a car mechanic. I am an Electronics /PLC tech. I believe that I found the problem, and it directly under the, I'm assuming fuel injection. there are two connectors white..with wires completely chewed off. There is now way I can get to them without removing some big stuff. I am willing to attempt this, but I know nothing about it. I should have the tools, but may need to buy others. Any info on removing the whole intake would be helpful. Or should I take it the garage?

It's not hard to remove and it sounds like you are more than capable.

Remove the PCV hose, EVAP hose, intake hose, throttle body wiring and coolant hoses, manifold braces and then all the bolts to remove.

Brady boss, you are killing us with no sharing pics here. Take some shots so that the folks can help you more. I think what you are describing seems doable if you are mechanically inclined. Heck, I bet if we have forum folks nearby you, they may even come help you out of being nice! Show us and the experts here can say DIY or go to a place.
