Interesting video on the new V6. I realize that it doesn't apply to our current 5th gens, but thought some of you may be interested.

Honestly, I'm glad our 4Runners don't have this engine. It has more plastic and some possible issues.

My Tacoma had the early variation of it, great engine besides the transmission it’s paired up that’s supposedly resolved now. Not sure about the plastic valve covers but there’s plenty of engines with plastic intake manifolds that have no issues.

While that new V6 is outstanding I'm looking forward to the new inline 4 turbo that will be put in the next gen 4Runners.

I guess plastic valve covers aren't any worse than the plastic intake manifold, oil filter housing, thermostat housing and radiator that we already have.

Still, plastic engine parts just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy.

This guy has been pretty accurate in his predictions, especially with the Tundra. At least it will still be made in Japan.

Ugh, but it’s still a 4 banger with a turbo pulling a truck. I don’t care who makes it, that is too small of an engine and turbos almost always have problems eventually. Toyota needs to stick to what they’re good at. Making boring, but super reliable cars and trucks with outdated tech.

Interesting video. I kinda like his artist rendering on the new front end.

I wonder what the mpg would be with the 4 cyl.

I drove a GMC Terrain (not mine) with a non turbo 4 cyl. and it was a slug and got poor mpg.

Had no trouble with my early P/U with a 4 banger. Went 300K+ miles!

The 2.3 Ford is currently using makes more torque and at lower RPM's than our 4.0. Believe me, you'd rather have that than a 3.5 V6 that you need to rev the shit out of to get any power.

Also a properly maintained turbo motor is every bit as reliable as a naturally aspired one. There are a few things that owners of turbos need to know for longevity. Proper warm up and cool down. And never ever rev a turbo motor in neutral or park. It will shorten the life of the turbo drastically.

The Toyota engineers are some of the best. I have faith that Mr Toyoda is not going to sign off on something that has poor reliability.

How the hell am I supposed to effectively mall crawl if I can't rev my engine in the parking lot? :annoyed:

There is also the possibility of getting the 3.5 GR turbo as an option.

I would like to think you are correct about Mr Toyoda however I would hope he is aware the frame issue for how many years and what has been done to mitigate that?

With this speculation about what runners and Tacoma’s, I’m getting a little scared I might have to find a new car company. Although I don’t know which one I would choose. Maybe just trade the 2016 in for a a 21 to have it last a few years longer….

I would get a 21 or 22. I guess I am old school the engines and trans now has good reputation. Hopefully my frame holds with FF and no winters.

I don’t like new stuff and taking risks but that’s just me

When I talk to people who own these turbo motors in newer stuff they usually don't get advertised mileage. If they cut the motor down to 2.0 and then try to make up the displacement with a turbo you gotta get into boost to get it moving which equals less mpg. Which is the very reason these manufacturers are moving in this direction to meet epa standards.

I'm with the others and I'll just hang on with the ole 4.0.

Which car company are you going to switch to?

Would you rather have a Toyota hybrid or turbo engine, or another manufacturer's hybrid or turbo engine?

Nobody is going to be putting big N/A motors in cars anymore in a few years. Aside from Sports cars, I guess.

I think most people don't get the advertised mileage due to their driving habits. Those EPA estimates are probably based on cruising at 70 MPH on the freeway, while most people are doing 75-85.

I do agree that I'd rather see something bigger than a 2.0, turbo or not. A big 4 cylinder, or small 6 on light boost seems like it would be better. 235 HP and 258 LB/FT of torque sounds a bit weak, unless they put the 4Runner on a major diet.

What does sound nice is that the rated torque is available from 1650 - 4000 RPM's!

Good thoughts James. I personally would like to see a small V6 turbo. OTOH it looks like a inline 4 is in the works.

The 2.4L turbocharged NX motor gets 275 hp and 317 ft/lbs of torque.

By comparison, our 4.0's get 270 hp and 278 ft/lbs of torque.

The NX motor's max torque is at a much lower rpm than the 4.0 which will be great for bigger/heavier vehicles with larger tires. The hybrid version should improve these numbers with more electric motor torque.

If the 6th gen is the same weight as the 5th gen, it should be more powerful with better mileage.

If the 6th gen is lighter, power and mpg's should improve even more.

Thank you for pointing this out! I was looking at the wrong motor specs. 275 HP and 317 TQ sounds perfect!

I’ve never been a fan of turbo lag.

And why not go with a TwinTurbo V6?

2 turbos to maintain or potentially fail?

Inline motors are inherently more durable.

My 3rz disagrees, the manual transmission helps though. I expect above 20 mpg if this is the next engine configuration, Toyota can not go on making an SUV like the 4runner that gets EPA ratings of 16 mpg city 19 highway, thats much worse than even my 3rd gen 4 cylinder.

If Toyota hadn't made the 4runner so huge with the 5th gen then they would easily be able to get by with the 3.5 V6. I know a lot here love the 5th gen 4runner, but I consider it a mistake to make it as large as it is. My family car was a first gen Acura MDX, it had 3 useable rows, it was a full sized suv, and it is smaller in every dimension than the current 4runner. Toyota should really decrease the dimensions next time around.

Since the average size of an American continues to increase, than the average size of a vehicle needs to increase. ;)

Torque would be helpful in most situations, since peak torque 'happens' in a RPM range where most of the driving is done and horsepower is a byproduct of the higher RPM range, usually over 4000 or 5000 RPM where little diving is done. For that reason I'll take a high torque engine. How they get high torque is a long debate, a blower would cut out the 'turbo lag' for the most part, not very cost efficient, but IMO better than twin turbos, which love constant babying. My daughter has a Ecoboost and the twin turbos are a thorn to her right now. Her Lotus Evora with a supercharged Toyota engine is much better than her Ecoboost.
