The automaker's motorsports tech center in Texas is building an updated version of the pickup-based camper it collaborated with the Chinook RV company on in the 1970s that will be unveiled at the SEMA auto show in Las Vegas this November.

A rendering of the Tacoma-based vehicle depicts the modern styling that the team is going for, which director of operations Marty Schwerter said will provide the kind of clearance needed for off-roading.

The team has nicknamed the creation "Tacozilla" and it includes a compartment large enough for a six-foot two-inch person to stand in, a bed over the cab, a table, a kitchenette and a toilet.

It's being built on a Tacoma TRD Sport chassis with a manual transmission and the sketches depict it with a set of oversize all-terrain tires and heavy duty suspension.

So there was another brand at SEMA that also did this … I’m trying to find a vid but haven’t yet… same concept but different.

There is a small niche market for these things.

I think Earth Roamer has the market cornered for serious off-road bling, but those are very huge and $$$.

Most people forget or don’t know is that the cheapest you can probably get away with a Taco Rig is about $110-$150,000 and after that the sky is the limit.

    A11B17D5-62C5-4795-A781-87D9ED9EB224.jpg

If you want to do the math, the donor truck is anywhere between $35,000 and $45,000, the flatbed modification is about $8-10,000, the camper is anywhere between $30-50,000, and any suspension and bumper modifications and add-ons can be between $10-15,000, depending on how crazy you go.

I have not researched as to how this will affect the gross vehicle weight rating, or if you are seriously maxing it out given that the Tacoma was not designed to do this, or just how sluggish one of these will be in real world applications.

The original Toyota camper trucks and U-Hauls were glacially slow, but that was a time where the average family sedan took 20 to 25 seconds to hit 60 miles an hour.
