    I'm the guy who bought the 19 Tacoma that noibody could fix. Long story short , the dealer gave me most of my money back. When buying the Tacoma I didn't understand that the 4 wheel drive would destroy its self if you drove it on dry pavement even for a very few miles. After getting the 4runner I was told the 4Runner had a much better 4 wheel drive sym. I bought the 4Runner with 4 wheel disc brakes thinking that was the best choice. WELL NOT REALLY. I always wondered why the 4Runner brake pedal had a spongy feeling , almost like the brakes needed to be rebuilt.
    Today at the dealer I was told to drive a new 4Runner off the new truck line up. I did. they all do this. The service manager said you have the cheaper brakes , it's called hydro pump brakes . You don't have a vacuum booster type. You have to buy the one with a hood scoop to get the good brakes. You have a electric motor pumping fluid , you can hear it running when you start up the 4Runner. He also said GM tried this for a few years and stopped doing this type braking system.

    Live and learn.

    If you have a SR5 look at the location where a vacuum booster would go, you have a strange looking device with a large bundle of wires feeding something.

    Very interesting about the brakes. There is some threads about that extra crap under the hood and a lot of people grumbling about the brakes but I got no problems with them on my OR.

    Most manufacturers strongly recommend not to operate 4x4 systems on dry pavement I do not believe that's anything new. Once in awhile and because the manual says to I "exercise" the 4x4 system by shifting in and out of it but I only have done it so far when I'm "up north" (weekend cottage) and I do it on the back dirt roads. I don't know how the system knows but it does. Can't comment about the brakes bought one so it is what it is I guess.

    I always thought the electric motor sound , when the key is first turned on , was an electric fuel pump. Turns out that it is the brakes pumping fluid. I don't even want to guess what all those wires are going to.:annoyed:My question is this : If the brakes are run off an electric motor what happens if the battery dies? No brakes?

    I'm going to assume your alternator is keeping the car running. If both die at the same time hold on tight I guess.

    Thanks for the info. I’m staying away from the SR5 now. But I cant stand a scooped hood....

    I have a ‘18 Taco and ‘19 4Runner OR.
    The brakes in the 4R work well but there’s a ton of brake pedal travel before they kick in.
    The wife drives the 4R and it doesn’t bother her.

    The problem is a stop light. You have to watch and make sure the 4runner isn't creeping into the rear of some other vehicle. Putting your foot on the pedal won't keep this from happening. You have to push the pedal down and hold it.

    Both the SR5 and TRD Off Road use an electric brake booster and the same braking system. The service advisor doesn't know what he is talking about since he says only the "hood scooped version" has good brakes.

    Try this: Turn the key to "on" but don't start the engine. When you press the brakes you will hear an electric motor sound. Release the brakes and the electric motor sound goes away.

    I like the electric brake booster because it makes it much easier to bleed the brakes. Folks on the Tacoma forums with electric brake booster system just lightly step on the brakes with the bleeder screw cracked open and it will bleed the brakes effortlessly.

    Seriously, we bought a ORP & after 3 days had to borrow a Sr5 from the dealer. I noticed the same nosedive (I drive diesel trucks), I USE my brakes! Anyway, it is my wife's daily driver & I would have heard something from her if it was happening to ours. We bought in March '19. Maybe it is a batch of trucks that have a bad part in them.
    Maybe start a thread & include build date so people can narrow this problem down.

    I agree here. I have driven two TRD Offroad's and they feel exactly like my SR5...spongy and takes a while to engage.

    Nothing new with 4x4 systems on pavement and uh nothing new for the electric brake system. All later model 4Runners have it, not exclusive to any one model. 03' Sport --Edit: I was wrong about all models having this system. I was not aware the 2wd system is a different vacuum type booster.

    I drive mine with 4wd on the pavement all the time. Even with the diffs locked. It just ratchets a lil no big deal....

    Normally I’m just jockeying her 4R in the driveway (close quarters) and when I go to stop I’m reminded the pedal travel is more than expected and I end up stopping later than desired. I’ve had a few close calls. Funny I don’t notice it in traffic. Maybe it improves as it’s driven. I’ll have to pay attention next time.

    WE were looking at a row of 4runners. The ones with hood scoops were different. I don't know if any were off road.

    Mine locked all wheels in a parking lot after 8 miles on dry pavement. The manual makes it clear not to do that.

    I'm not sure I looked at OFF ROAD 4runners. This dealership has field full of Toyotas. I would like to have an OFF ROAD , they look better. I would never be off road but I think the look is much better. There were two things I wanted as a kid, Erector set and a English bike. I never got either. Life is not fair.:sadviolin:

    Don't know about the 4x4 bit since I don't drive 'em....as for the brakes, the brake system on my '19 SR5 functions just fine in all driving situations including holding still, just like every vehicle I've driven over the last 36 years.

    I stand corrected they are not the same, but the part listing says 2wd though. Not many of us have 2wd, so I was unfamiliar with the vacuum system. I don't think that would include ATRAC, Crawl Control, Down Hill Assist either. Those systems have all the sensor wires going to the master cylinder to control those systems with the electric motor pumping fluid to the hydraulic booster. But the fact that a hood scoop has anything to do with the brake system doesn't make sense to me. If you look at the part listings the Master Cylinder that is cheaper, says 2wd and vacuum booster. The one that is over $900, is listed as 4wd and Hydraulic type booster system. So I still say the Service manager is full of it, saying you have the cheap brakes. Your picture is the more expensive hydraulic booster version. IMHO the best upgrade you can do for your brakes is performance pads and rotors when the old ones start wearing out. I have never had a problem with my 4th gen or my 5th gen creeping at red lights either. I would test a 2wd version and see if you like the vacuum system and trade down. Most of us have never thought about a 2wd, so let us know if the vacuum system is better with out all the traction control and 4wd assist systems.

You literally scare the fuck out of me and I hope your insured when you’re not paying attention and creep into my 6 at a stop light. But we all know that won’t happen because I’ll be paying attention for you and will move out of they way. Cause 500lbs vs 5000lbs isn’t a fair fight.

    I've never had mine off pavement. That might be a completely different case.
