I assume it will eventually be 100% of the 3.4 engines that get the recall. How many people will follow through with it is yet to be known. Many will probably try to wait it out and hope their engine doesn’t blow which is probably safer than having the dealer rebuild your truck anyways.

And I don't even care about V8s that much anymore (I had a 2010 5.7L Tundra). Not even for the sound because I prefer stealth.

If I had one I would drive it close to home until out of warranty then trade it in as soon as the 5/60k is up. Ain't no way I would trust the local toyota dealerships' mechanics to tear my 60k truck apart and turn the interior into an operating room.

Designed obsolescence got the US in trouble with Toyota selling reliable vehicles back then. Maybe we can take back the reliability badge. I see an opening. lol

Admiring what was already known. Toyota PR must have hired ex CCP staff to run interference on this.

Still can’t believe they made Tundra the least reliable 1/2 ton now

It's especially embarrassing that Rams are having a decent run at it with their Hurriance I-6 turbo and the "ancient" 8 speed ZF derived transmission, and they are soon to bring back their Hemi V8. What a time we live in.

Imagine the techs at the dealership rebuilding that engine. How many leftover bolts will they have when finished?

I wonder if Toyota will just scrap the Tundra from their lineup like Nissan did with the Titan? I don’t think they have another engine they could offer in it as a second option.

Toyota sells a lot more Tundras than the Titan ever did so I imagine they are gonna insist on riding it out, the word hasn't gone out to a lot of 2nd gen owners so Toyota may be hoping they can get this situation under control before those buyers replace their 2nd gens. From what I hear Tundra has a very consistent and loyal buyer base that doesn't really have any room to grow but they will come back for another one after 10-15 years.

Plus the San Antonio plant's output is 80%+ Tundras so without it, it will shut down for sure.

All of their NA V8 truck engines are all out of production so they don't really have a way back at this point. Chrysler was (!) smarter in this regard, they paid lip service to the feds at the time and said they were stopping the 5.7 Hemi production but they never really did.

So Ford can apparently make good turbocharged engines for 1/2 tons but Toyota can’t. Boy how the tables are slowly turning. Pretty happy I got a 4.0 v6 in my 4runner.
Couldn't imagine Tundra engine going through this torture test like the ecoboost engine.

Hey Toyota, your 3.4 TT Tundra engines suck.

Sadly, it appears that peak Tundra was Gen1 with the 4.7. Outstanding truck with a legendary motor. Nothing to write home about since that one.

I feel bad for anyone who really wants a Tundra and is forced to choose between a Gen3 rolling engine-replacement or some tired, overpriced Gen2.

When the news of the Toyota motor failing first started circulating here I mentioned I thought a part of it was due to the EPA mandates making everyone scrambling to squeeze more power with less fuel and emissions, leading to less room for error for manufacturers, lots of people here made fun of me for being too close minded, citing that that everyone else was doing just fine, and that the Toyota failures are only a few here and there and thus no big deal

Then all the GM recalls really widened beyond the 6.2L.

In the video he said the EV credit allowed manufacturers to fudge numbers and thus he thought relaxing CAFE would actually make things worse for manufacturers. I think he completely missed the forest in that the mpg targets were unrealistic in the first place. I think now manufacturers need to be honest and explain to lawmakers that the previous EPA mandates were not scientific and CAFE needs a serious revamp. In its original form CAFE was fine, but the successive tightening starting with Bush 43 years, then Obama, then Biden years keep making gas engines harder and harder to make.

The inability to meet these standards is a feature of the system and not a bug. The purpose of the system is what it does.

Yep, it was all designed to ban gasoline vehicles without outright banning gasoline vehicles and put the blame on manufacturers.

"See we gave the car makers the option of making 50mpg full size pickup trucks that has to emit zero emissions while protect the occupants should he run into a small bollard at 60mph, and the private sector refused to get with the times".

This guys video came out Saturday i believe?
Pretty sure he took info from these videos in order to make his video.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zglEmlYAu04

If you want a quicker or short hand version of whats going on with the GM cranks this is a time stamped part of the video that gives you a lot more insight. Basically the peaks and valleys on the crank are too far apart. The machining leaves grooves that are so deep the thin oil cant fill them up, and the high spots are so high that the thin oil cant keep the crank from hitting the bare metal. From what i gather, someone needs to do this sort of testing to the Toyota cranks.

This is getting ridiculous. Especially since Toyota isn’t helping them out at all even though this happened after the engine was replaced.

From what I've seen from Toyota Corp in the past I was surprised not giving him a new truck. To tell him to deal with the insurance is ridiculous especially when lives could have been lost in this incident. I was discussing this with my family and if it happened to us how can we get the baby out of the car. It would be like a movie, a dad taking the baby from the child seat while vehicle is still moving. Things could have got worse if it was a hybrid and the battery catch fire. Fumes from a battery fire especially a Li-ion make an escape near impossible imo.
