    Hi guys,

I'm new to community having purchased a 2017 4Runner TRD Pro last Saturday. This Saturday I'm looking to make a 500 mile trip to pick-up a '66 Chevy C10 shortbed stepside pick-up truck. I'm weighing my options now as to the best way to bring the vehicle home and was curious if renting a tow dolly or vehicle transport from UHaul.

My only towing background consists of a handful of moving trips with a UHaul pull behind trailer and taking my dad's boat to the lake about 10 years ago.

Is this even feasible for one-time one-way trip or would I be better suited to go another route?

The Chevy truck has a modern Chevy V8 in it and a few other upgrades. I'm not too worried about protecting the vehicle finish. It has the rusty, dinged, and dented, patina look.

Thanks for any help and advice. I'd love to take my 4Runner and tow it back, but I'm not looking trash the transmission of a vehicle I bought less than a week ago.

Any idea what the weight of the C10 is? I wouldn't be afraid to max out the 4runner's towing capacity, under the right circumstances.

If you choose to tow it with the 4runner, I would keep the speed under 60, and tow in S4. You might even want to go S3, especially on inclines. You'll get shit mileage, but it will be easier on the truck.

Depending on the weight you need to haul, though, you might be better off renting a full size.

    Welcome to the forum!

Thanks. I was thinking about renting a full-size as one of my options. Just too excited to drive the new Pro.

Looking up weights online it appears the factory weight was somewhere near 3200 lbs. The truck has been upgraded with a modern fuel injected engine and suspension dropped. To be honest, I'm not sure if the modern engine and components weigh more or less than what was installed in 1966. I have to believe I'm going to be somewhere near 5000 lbs if I went the tow dolly route.

I'm really going to have to pled ignorance. My knowledge on towing is pretty limited. I've also heard that there could be concerns with towing a rear wheel drive vehicle in a tow dolly. Hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. I'd really like to bring the truck back this weekend.

The UHaul website says the 4Runner can do it, but then again, it won't be their problem if I blow up my 4Runner. The tow dolly has a listed weight of 750 lbs and the auto transport has 2,210.

It sounds like the auto transport puts you over the 5K limit. The dolly and C10 combined is under 4K, so that should be fine.

I"m not sure if there is a way to disengage the rear differential on the C10, but it might be ok just left in neutral. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.

Thanks for the info. I'm still pretty nervous about the situation. I may go another route just for peace of mind.

I would personally prefer the full vehicle transport trailer. But, 500 miles isn't very far.

I'll be curious to know what you end up doing. Is the C10 going to be a project, then?

The C10 has a 5.3L Vortec 5300 in it. Rat rod patina look. Interior is complete with brown leather and custom retro style bluetooth head unit. Static drop.

It's in pretty good shape. Good starter hot rod. Complete enough to ride comfortably but still some room for me to work on it.

Hey, TWashburn1212, there must be someone in your circle, or a friend of a friend who has a car hauler and would appreciate a few bucks and the adventure of picking up an old vehicle. There’s also the hidden benefit of having another car person along, just in case you need assistance with something. Your old truck would be eminently safer on a car trailer than being towed. And you can’t beat the muscle of something like a big diesel F350 pulling it. Good luck, sounds like fun.

Originally my girlfriend and I had an entire vacation planned around this in the Smoky Mountains. Unfortunately she works in the medical field and was told she can't have off this week.

I may just see what kind of towing options I can find with Enterprise, Hertz, etc. Worst case scenario the seller has offered to assist in shipping if I set everything up. It's just going to be hard to purchase a new vehicle than drive 500 miles away from it. I've also got 4 or 5 days to make it all happen, so I can take my time.

As long as I have my tent and my fly rod I'm determined to make a fun trip out of it.

Wow, cool truck, TWashburn1212! I owned a 1966 fleet side c10 back in the day, and it was a cool truck. It was a 6, with a two speed automatic. Simple and easy to fix in the driveway. Good luck with yours!
