I bought my 2019 TRD ORP at the end of May 2019, then moved cross-country ten days later. The 4R was fantastic on the trip and very comfortable driving the 1700+ miles. Since that time I have taken it over a couple of mountain passes, dirt/gravel roads, roads that needed low 4x4 and dirt roads to nowhere. The bloodhound and basset hound enjoy the space in the cargo area to stretch out and sleep while we road trip.

I have ZERO complaints about the 4R.

Still there are times I feel this truck is just too luxurious for off-roading. Anyone else every have that feeling about theirs, even for a few seconds? I've had 4Runners in the past as well as FJ's. Up until my 2006 4Runner, they felt rugged and the FJ's have always felt a little more rugged.

Both trucks can get you anywhere you want to go, although I am NOT a rock climber. I have not modified anything yet because in back of my mind I wasn't certain I was going to keep it. I trade cars a LOT but I have always leaned toward keeping the 4Runner more than selling it.

The 4Runner has always been a luxury suv in my mind. Since 1984, they have never cost less than many others but are continually more utilitarian/rugged than others.

Luxury? Not really. The T4R is far from luxury but I do consider it one bad ass capable SUV. When I think luxury, I think of my sister in laws brand new Mercedes G Wagon lifted on 24” wheels. That’s a luxury SUV!

Glad you're liking your new ride. What makes it feel luxurious to you? I would say that the 4R, running about 10 years now on the current model and late to get most "standard" Toyota features, isn't necessarily a luxury car, but it is increasingly an "all in one" car like the LC evolved to be. It's certainly a ride that can get dirty and wash up and perform both "roles" properly.

20190825_170752.jpg Perfect mix of luxury and offroading if you ask me... I test drove a lifted rubicon for a few days before buying my T4R and I'm so glad I went with the 4Runner. If i was going to be buying something that was only for offroading/rock climbing than yes i'd probably go with the jeep, but for my lifestyle with the everyday mix of city driving and offroad weekends... The 4Runner is the best! I've also owned a 2011 Jeep GC overland before this vehicle and THAT was too much luxury... Not even a close comparison to what the T4R can do

I’ve always been a fan of small wheels and big tires. But the 24’s actually work quite nicely on that ride.

Exactly that. It is a great "all-purpose" car and it's interesting that I don't see many complaints about the mechanical side of the 4R like I do on the Tacoma forum.

I've never considered a Jeep after riding in a few of them, driven by friends. I've always been a Toyota guy with my first 4Runner being a 1987, then a new 1991 and one of my best a 2000. I loved FJs when I had them and just bought another one. Although my 2007 FJ was very comfortable driving from Indiana to Utah and Colorado camping, I keep seeing the new 4Runner as my long distance/off road vehicle. I think it's good to have multiple cars so I can drive what I am feeling like that day.

I’m not a fan boy of the new jeeps. They lost me once they did away with the 4.0. Plus, Jeeps are EVERYWHERE, and they all look the same. The TR4 is one hell of a vehicle. My wife’s is the only lifted one we’ve seen in our area so she likes being unique. It’s funny how all the jeep people break their necks gawking at her 4R.

It seems like everyone and their dog owns a lifted 4runner around here. I would say seeing one stock height is less common than seeing a lifted one. Most of which have CrossFit stickers on them and have never seen gravel.

Not in my region... Lifted jeeps are everywhere you look, but you may only see 2-3 lifted 4Runners in town. The shops I got my lift installed at (I don't have a garage or tools yet) said it was only the 2nd one they've ever done on a 4Runner. They are the biggest place in town to get lifts installed too.

I was thinking the same thing just the other day while scouting some elk country... "Man this is kind of a pricey rig to be taking on some of these trails... but dang... it can go just about anywhere and it is so fun.!"

4runner imo is not pricey or luxurious? Ford explorer can run 55k easy and still not be luxury. 4 runner is awesome but I love it for it's simplicity and what it is.

I get what ya mean. Mine's just an SR5 but compared to my old Blazers, the T4R looks and feels like a luxury ride. Reminds me a lot of myself...can get dirty and do some work, but cleans up real nice for a night out.

Because Toyota ruined the 3rd gen Tacoma. Wait until the next gen 4runner comes out and see if there are any issues. Toyota is not what it used to be. Sign of the times I guess.

Don't sell the SR5 short it's just as good as any model 4. There really is not much difference between the models. The Limited has the most differences.

I don't find our 4runner to be luxurious at all. It's functional and dependable. Now my wife's limited highlander feels like luxury. All sorts of gadgets and safety features.

All they woulda had to do was leave the old 4.0 in the Tacoma and it'd be as good as it ever was. As it is now, garbage. It's under powered compared to 2nd gen Tacoma's. I hated mine. Got worse gas mileage, too, because i travel a lot. The 3rd gen hates wind and hills at hiway speed.

In my work parking lot last week, I parked next to a white 4Runner that looked like mine except for the tan interior and non-blacked out trim. Two vehicles away was a grey RMX(?) Edition lifted on 285s. I counted a total of 6 5th gen TR4s in one parking lot, and two were lifted. And this is a tech company full of nerds. Tons of 4Runners up here, and lots of Jeeps. I have noticed that most 4Runners are driven by women, though.

That’s a waist of money. It does say “look at me” fairly well though.
