Has any one gone to a fifteen inch Wheel with a tire that is slightly larger than what came on stock 17's?

I doubt you can do 15in on these vehicles. 16in maybe and you can still clear the calipers. I have a 3rd gen taco on 16in wheels so I bet you could try on the 4r. But the biggest question here is why? :boink:

So that you can have more sidewall when you air down.

The 5th gen calipers are bigger than 2nd/3rd gen Tacoma calipers, so 17" wheels are the minimum, unless you run extremely negative offset so the rim is outboard of the caliper. Some of the Arctic Trucks builds are able to use 15" wheels this way:

I dig the reasoning but I think you’re at a severe mechanical design disadvantage with the fact that 17” is the minimum unless you get really really creative. I would be interested to see what solutions you find if any.

    Stock so far…..except better tires.
Haven't tried it myself, but I believe the 17 inch "Sport" wheels from the Third Generation Tacoma have too much offset (30 mm) to use comfortably on a 5th generation 4Runner because of the larger front brake system.
So, a 15 is a non-starter unless you had a combination of huge negative offset and spacers to get the wheels to completely clear the brakes.
    Not worth the effort.....
