my new 4r limited has a factory remote start, it is a three button process and when you step out into the cold and go to the newly warmed car, and you open the door, the car automatically shuts down! Not sure why? I have the key and without it can someone just hop in and drive away!? Not sure the rational

No one can just hop in and drive away without the key. As you said, it shuts down when the door is opened.

I guess my point is if I remote start my car, then i have the key. No one else. So why shut it down when i get in

I could never figure out why Toyota has always done this with their remote starts cuz GM and some others do not shut down when the door is open as long as you have the key. Maybe someone else will have more insight. Even though it shuts off it probably doesn't effect anything long term but it's obviously a minor inconvenience.

    Yeah, it fuggin sucks.

I don’t use it... I’m slightly anal about starting/stopping vehicles.

But the positive of it is your vehicle is warm or cold inside depending on the season.

That's the reason I installed a after market remote start.

Some other OEM remote starts do this too... it's not just Toyota.

I have the Toyota remote start on mine, and I don't really consider it a big deal that it shuts off.

Are people worried about wear and tear by starting the vehicle again?
