Thicker oil

Anybody on here tried using thicker oil to minimize the irritating ticking noise on 5th Gen 4Runner?

 

Oh boy an oil thread, I anticipate anecdotal evidence ahead!

 

I use coconut oil it’s thick like Oprah in the winter

 

According to the manual, you can use thicker oil in some situations. But, I used 5W/30 in my Tacoma and it was just as loud. It's the lifters.

 

I bought some Liqua Moly MOS2 to put in mine to hopefully quiet down the noise. I had read on some thread on some website somewhere that it had helped. I also read a few comments about that stuff settling and possibly clogging things up. So I haven't had the courage to actually use it. I just use whatever 0W-20 is on rollback when I need to change my oil.

I work with a bunch of chemical engineers, maybe one of these days I'll get around to asking them about it, lol.

Anyway, I too obsessed over changing to a different oil to quiet down this engine. My fix is mainly to turn up the radio.

 

What you need is thinner oil.........negative weight oil.

Everything about the truck is loud. It is a offensively loud vehicle. My neighbors used to yell at me and ask me if I had a performance exhaust, and I said no, that’s just the normal sound. I have grown to like it.

 

Short answer “No”.

You could set a new trend and try using gear oil, it’s pretty thick.

 

Just be glad it isn't as loud as a DI engine.

I have been running 5w-30 for the last couple of oil changes, it does reduce some of the chatter. Kind of gives it a little cushion i think, I don’t see many 32* days here so I’m going to stick with it for a little bit.

 

I think you are talking about the direct injection mode sound. When it switches to port injection it should be good. Thicker oil is not the solution. Just stick to 0W20. You bought a working truck so high engine noise is expected.

A Lexus ES AWD / RX AWD should give you a nice quiet ride. From Toyota line up Toyota Venza is pretty quiet too.

 

If you want long life of your vehicle follow this guys advice..

 

Just change it every 100 miles, it's cheap insurance

I have been watching a lot of his videos, he really gets down to the points.

 

I also suggest changing out your synthetic oil every 3000 miles to be safe and waste money.

$54 0W-20 oil Toyota/ exxon mobil Case of 6 Quarts Full Synthetic TGMO SN 0W-20 Oil

0W-20 oil the dealer was using (over my 2 free oil changes). I went with Red Line 0W-20 (first time using Red Line) which is an ester based oil that has a high level of ZDDP (zinc). With about 2,000 miles on the Red Line oil I do (and my wife also commented) that the engine is running a bit smoother and quieter. Red Line notes " High natural viscosity index (VI) provides thicker oil film in bearings and cams". I run 5k OCI's - we'll see how this goes.

I went with 05-20 this go around - no science whatsoever just my 25+ years as a tech tells me to... Yes, I know oils and engines have changed dramatically since my garage days but it seems to be doing well at 67K and the mild Florida temps.

 

Sounds like a good plan. I’ve been using 0W-20 in winter, then 5W-30 the rest of the year in CA and the south west.
