Hello everyone, about a month maybe month and a half ago I started hearing a squeak whenever going over a speed bump (after apex when coming off of the speed bump). Looked underneath and noticed my passenger side lbj boot was torn. Not sure how long it’s been torn, but the squeak has only been there for that duration. I do plan on replacing them in about a month but I’ve been out of work for a month and finances are tough. I am thinking of cleaning the boot, putting in some lithium grease, and using some type of sealant (I’ve heard people using shoe goo). I start a new job in a few days and I do intend on ordering parts to replace in 3 weeks. I really just need to alleviate/prolong them until then. Anyone have any thoughts or better suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Nope. Park it and walk. These things are known for throwing worn LBJs and you'll just have a bigger repair bill.

First of all, Congratulations on the new job!

Regarding your issue. Have you checked Rockauto? There should be some relatively low cost options to get you through a few weeks before you are able to order the parts you really want.

These ball joints are inverted, and the weight of the vehicle is pulling the ball out of the socket all day every day.
If that boot is torn, and you are hearing a squeak, that means the metal ball is making love to the metal cup. This wears the cup and will allow the ball to slip out which causes your front end to collapse and your tire to fold into your fender. On a vehicle your age, this will be an incident that will easily total your vehicle and insurance is going to give you a check for a whopping $2200 and you are going to have to use that to find dependable transportation. (meaning practically impossible)

Your best bet is to borrow some money some how and buy a ball joint cheap at auto parts store and replace it BEFORE it collapses AND THEN buy the TOYOTA OEM ball joint as soon as money allows and replace it. The aftermarkets are well known for only lasting 30,000-50,000 miles before they fall apart. The OEM Toyota ball joint is BY FAR the best that is on the market but its a bit pricey compared to the cheap auto shop stuff.
    OR
You can park it and walk or bum a ride. Driving on that ball joint any more is asking for it to collapse.
