Traded in my Tacoma 2018 TRD Sport for a 2021 Nightshade limited. I was pretty close to getting the TRD Pro since I was on the fence about the suspension but I figured ill get some bilsteins and level it out in a few months and hardly do any off-roading.

I have an older chevy that I used to haul stuff around in when I needed to... I wanted more space in the backseat and cargo area enclosed since I camp/fish a lot. Also the 4 runner had a lot more interior options that I liked, dual zone, seat control heat/cool etc.

I didn’t last two months with a 3rd gen taco. Transmission is funky and not enough power on the highway. It absolutely sucked driving that 3.5L on the interstate. It would often drop into 4th to maintain speed. And RPM’s in 4th on that truck are way higher than the 4Runner at the same speed.

Be sure you do lengthy test drives before taking the leap.

What’s your reasoning to go back to a Tacoma? I have been tossing it around also.

I always loved trucks, i had 3 rams (dont ask).
My last ram was junk, as the other 2, but i am stubborn and...you get the idea
So i got one of the most reliable vehicles you can get, the woman LOVES the runner and I want to make her happy while I still can hit the trails, the hunting grounds, the camping sites; but I still love trucks and no matter how much time goes by, I still look after a nice taco or a tundra.
I don't know, it's something about trucks that connects in my brain and gets me a hard-on. The stance, the power, the size, the feeling of safety. It's a manly vehicle.
Do I need one? Hell no, but in this day and age I am no longer looking at "need" , I am also considering "want"; time is getting short and it is time for ME as well.
Edit: I will never own another Ford/FCA/GM vehicle, but I would buy a Cybertruck today.

My Co-Worker and Tacoma owner is trying to get out of his 2018 Tacoma, he said the constant down and upshifting with the V6 and autobox combo is terrible.

After much deliberation I had my heart set on a Tacoma TRD OR DCLB Premium in cement. Was prodded into checking out the 4Runner and now I leaning towards the 4R despite preferring the look of the Taco. The 4R just makes more functional sense for me since I don't really have the need for the truck bed. I was planning to put a cap on the Taco to sleep in it, but can accomplish the same in the 4R without the additional expense of a cap and leaks! Probably be 4R TRD OR Premium in MGM, but would consider a PRO if I could possibly purchase it at MSRP or less.

I love my AG Pro. As much as I would like to go back to a Tacoma I just don’t want that annoying transmission shifting all the time. I would rather jump up to a tundra. I was looking at 2 nice ones on the dealer lot where I got my Pro. I just don’t know if I want to let my 4runner go. But I’m no need to rush and sell it or trade it in. But I might go to take a tundra for a test ride.

Welcome! I came from a 2017 TRDOR and absolutely love my 4Runner and would never go back. In my opinion the Tacoma was a gutless truck with the 3.5L paired with the 6spd. If I ever need a truck, I’ll go with a full size over a Tacoma. But, to each his own.

Welcome! I had a 2020 Tacoma TRD ORP for about a year. Sold it and bought another 4Runner. Tacoma just wasn't for me. If I get another truck, it will be a full size anyway. The 4Runner in my opinion is vastly superior to the Taco.

Tacoma’s 3.5l power train sucks compared to the 4.0l

Its a worlds difference. I also get better MPG’s in my 4runner lifted higher with bigger tires than I did in my Tacoma:facepalm:

tundra or 4Runner are the superior vehicles in regards to their power trains. That 5.7l in the tundra is a lot of fun:burnrubber:

Newb question... and i assume it will but never hurts to ask. Will a 2020 TRD Pro rack fit on a 21 nightshade limited? I assumed they are the same body so its okay but just wondering.

You should grab a Tundra with a 5.7, once the new hybrid and twin turbo V6 comes out, the 5.7 will no longer be available.

People ask me if they should go Taco or 4Runner. I tell them, if they absolutely need a truck bed, cabin space and/or towing capacity, go with a Tundra with the 5.7, if not go with a 4Runner.

So how do you like your 4Runner over the Taco? Would you say the overall ride quality, transmission and comfort is better?

I came from a 2015 Tundra DoubleCab and switched to a 2015 4Runner. I miss having the truck bed and V8 power but I enjoy driving the 4Runner way more than the Tundra. More pros than cons with a 4Runner, well at least for me that is.

Just did the same, except I don’t have my 4Runner yet.

Ordered a 2021 TRD Pro Lunar Rock

Traded a 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road. Couldn’t deal with space inside and the shit transmission.

I know and I am debating it. The current Tundra is an avg of 15mpg in real world now and the new V6, rumor has it about 30+
Here in Canada we have 3 balls and we pay carbon tax, now 11c/liter +13% tax, because f you, bend over and pay.
Love goes a long way, but now gas is also 4.36 liter and going up every year with that stupid carbon tax.
I guess I need to figure out how deep is my love....

As someone who has both currently, I have a 2019 limited cement Double cab Taco, wife has a 2020 ORP 4Runner there both great.
Toyota just did a TSB 0092-20 ECU update that IMO fixed the tranny issues for the Tacoma. That update was for 19's and 20's, Truck doesnt gear hunt anymore and stays in 3-5 longer. I love the way it drives now.
Its all about what's practical for people for your needs really.

That transmission shifting issue is what’s holding me back to possibly trading my Pro 4runner in for a Tacoma Pro. Another reason I’m tossing around is my wife has a SUV Acura RDX. We really don’t need 2 SUV’s. I will need to test drive a new Tacoma Pro before I make a move. Tough decisions.

I just bought my 4Runner the last week of December, I had a 2019 DCOR man trans Tacoma, I couldn’t do the 3.5 anymore either. I picked up a new 2020 4Runner ORP for the wife (Murano trans going out) in Aug. I was having a pulley or tensioner problem on my Tacoma about 100 miles before the warranty ended, so I had been driving the 4Runner for a week or so.

Well after driving her 4Runner it sold me, and more importantly what I was missing from the 4.0. Not to mention all the little things I noticed about the 4Runner that was lacking on the Tacoma. The 4Runner is very much built better, with things I see will last longer.

Tacoma vs 4Runner was a tough decision for me as well. Ultimately went with the 4Runner for the following reason: 1) Seating position 2) hearing about all the transmission issues in the Tacoma 3) made in Japan. However, I gotta say a mildly lifted Tacoma OR in cement gray w 33" tires is almost the perfect looking vehicle.

You can make your 4runner look the same with a nice lift. The 4runner is definitely nicer all around. I loved my 2015 Tacoma but did not want one above 2016.

After investing so much time into the process of deciding which Tacoma I wanted: TRD OR Prem DCLB in cement and eventually a cap. The 4R just ultimately makes the most sense for me (TRD OR Prem in MGM). But, I still prefer the look of the Taco.

Yes, the Pro rack will fit in any 5th gen 4Runner. Although, as the owner of a Pro, I’d advise you against it. I think the Pro rack looks kind of cool, but its functionality is poor. I would rather have the regular side rails and crossbars. I don’t hate it and am not in a rush to replace it at this point, but if I’d had the option, I wouldn’t have chosen it. Just a flawed design and execution, IMO.
