I'm not going to try and explain the why LOL but if I was so compelled to change my oil filter without doing the entire oil change cuz I just did it how much oil would I lose in the process? Is there only a certain amount that will come out while the builder was out of there or would it continue to just pour out since I'm not draining it from the pan? I think I know the answer to this but I just need to hear it from someone else

.6 quarts I think. Just refill until the level is at the correct point on the stock. If the engine has been started as mentioned by @glwood54

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that unless the vehicle is running, there would be no oil being sent to the filter. If the filter canister is drained, I think that's pretty much what would come out, what was in the canister.

When you re-installed the oil filter canister, did you fill it to the top of the cartridge?? If so that would be the answer, if not. I would run it, let it sit & check dip stick & add accordingly.
