Are there any/many here that simply run the stock suspension and are satisfied that it meets their needs?

    I'm not being sarcastic.

Seems like most of the threads are for aftermarket suspension upgrades which is totally cool, but there's not a lot of discussions about stock suspension performance.

    Just curious,

    Thanks

the OEM suspension is perfect for on street and highway driving or as people on the forum refer to as Mall Crawling but not to good for off road use thats why you see so many post about suspension upgrades

I bet stock suspension is plenty fine for stock tire size and most situations thrown at a 4 runner. Plenty. Especially when you think about the compromise of the fact most 4runners spend most of their lives on-road

But you have to admit, runners look soooo good hiked up just a little bit. I’d like to get a lift, but dont want to regret it if the ride gets all harsh or poorly damped.

I install bigger rims with lower profile tires that measure up to a smaller diameter giving the illusion of more lift..,

I just didn’t like the extreme lean going around turns, and then if you hit the brakes it was dive, dive, dive.

lol, yes, stock does feel quite “nautical”. I was surprised how soft it felt. But honestly, when hitting rough roads or trails, the stock suspension does feel very well controlled imo.

I think the stock setup is a good compromise for the way most 4runners are driven. If you're not lifting it, there's no reason to change unless you're unhappy with the handling.

I drove the doors off mine for the first ~30K miles on stock suspension and was never dissatisfied. The nosedive was there, but didn't really bother me.

I only changed to raise the front a bit and reduce nose dive. Other than that I had no complaints.

I agree, I actually like the soft ride. My pickup and Sequoia are not soft but rather harsh.

Had a friend with a Shelby mustang and he could take a turn very fast but riding with him, I had to visit the dentist afterwards to get my filling replaced because they were knocked out due to the harsh ride. I'm exaggerating for drama, but not by much.

The only complaint I have is if I jump the curb slightly with one of the rear wheels, like turning to sharply out of a parking lot,
The rear wheel make a big thud. Same thing happens when driving over rocks. Not sure if that's a 4Runner thing or what?

All good points, i have been driving 4x4’s for some time now, and probably forgot how mushy they were. Carry on.

Talk about mushy, I remember how soft and comfortable the ride was in my parents old Crown Vic. And the seat was nearly as comfortable as your favorite couch. I could drive that thing forever without any fatigue other than getting tired. It was great for road trips.

I grew up in the 70's, those big sedans really rolled and dived but were very comfortable.

Next time you're flipping through TV channels find a show from the 70's or even 80's that has a car chase scene. You'll be amazed how those big boats sway around compared to a modern car.

IMHO, the roll and dive we experience feels more pronounced because we are sitting higher than a sedan. Longer fulcrum.

I love the ride of my old stock setup I only charged out because I wanted to get more serious off-roading
But it was very soft great but for the 99% of what most people do with their trucks it’s was fine

For my use, the stock suspension worked great. It just didn't look great. I wanted a more level truck, and Eibach struts were the best compromise for me. Could have done front spacers, I suppose, to keep more of the factory ride characteristics.

I liked the stock suspension. I upgraded because a) I was worried about cavitation (perhaps not a super valid concern) on long moderate speed trails, b) a little more ground clearance doesn't hurt when on the trails, and c) most importantly, articulation - longer extension of the suspension especially in front. Also, my 32.4" tires fit better after the lift.. no more rubbing!

Happy with the capabilities of my TRD Off Road. I did upgrade to Bilstein 5100s which gives me a little more travel, but I’m going to keep the stock suspension as long as it works for my off-road excursions. I’m sure I’ll get flamed for this, but moving to 33s would only result in an extra 1” of clearance. So far, learning to take appropriate lines suffices. Stay tuned!

Not even. 265/70/17's are about 31.6", so a true 33 will only add .7".

However, clearance isn't the only reason to go with bigger tires. For me, it is about traction and flotation. I play in the sand sometimes and wanted a bigger footprint. And, I'm not going to act like I don't like the way it looks.

I fully agree about picking lines, though! This will do more for you than a little extra ground clearance every time.

I dislike the stock suspension with a prejudice. It’s too soft and floaty for me. Wish Toyota invested a little more in the offroad models. Maybe Bilstein like the Tacoma’s?

Reason why I chose the limited. The limited as a way better ride. The nose dive isn’t nearly as bad as the other trims have

Bilstein offroad and fox pro. The fox would still be above.

however I gutted my suspension and I’m happy now.

A lot of potential customers wouldn't really understand this, though. I'd bet that Toyota considered this.

Honestly, though, I had no issues with the stock suspension. Sure, it was floaty. But, it got the job done.

This may be true. But, anyone who plans on modifying the suspension would probably want to avoid messing with XREAS. And, when it comes time to replace your shock you're either paying an arm and a leg for original equipment or removing the XREAS altogether.

yes, you are right. I’m getting the itch to add some lift but will only do 1.5 lift in the front. Even then I nervous that it will mess up the shocks. When the do ever go out which shouldn’t be for a long while hopefully. I’d just go to something else.

yes, been searching the forum about this. Cornfed suspensions seems legit. Swaying right now towards them. Any other suggestions you have are appreciated.
