Spark plug question for the enthusiasts

^Secondary air injection system was added in 2014, because the 1GR otherwise could no longer pass tighter emissions regulations. The hotter plugs may have been for emissions as well.

Of interest is the FJ Cruiser. It too got the hotter plugs for a single (final) year in the US.

 

I’m at 68,500 miles on OE plugs. Factory recommends swapping @ 68k. Should I? What are noticeable signs of less than satisfactory plugs

 

Factory Iridium Plugs, Denso SK16HR-11 should last 100k miles under normal conditions. You idle a lot, should last less, you drive mostly highway maybe you can squeeze more. But I would check them at 80k, that´s just me. You also want to replace them at 10 years. I see you have a 2016, you could be due soon.

^There's a good chance your secondary air injection valves will fail before you reach 120k miles. Consider replacing spark plugs then, since the valves would need to be removed to access the plugs.

My manual says 120K miles too. I’m just over that and have had no issues with the original plugs. I’ve had new plugs sitting on my table for a couple weeks but haven’t had a chance to change them yet.

 

Who says this? I never hear of anyone having this problem.

 

Crap! I forgot about that... I was just mulling over if would be worth loosening and re- snugging the plugs at 50-60-70k-ish but now it's a no for me.

I just get annoyed when people tell others to change parts or do maintenance that isn’t required.
I don’t like to see people waste their time and money.

I had to use a search engine to find it. Anyways I was gonna change mine at 60K (because that is what I do with my 2007 FJ).. but now I will save my nickles until the miles pile on a bit more.

strange that people are trying to save just a few bucks and willing to be scammed because they really think they found a deal.

these are the same people that will drive 10 miles out of the way to save a nickel on a gallon of gas. The term tripping over dollars to pick up a penny does not make any sense to them

Your reading comprehension is lacking. As I said the secondary air injection valves are not a scheduled maintenance item. If and when the valves fail around 120k, consider replacing the spark plugs at the same time because the valves need to come out to access spark plugs. The gaskets for the air injection valve pipes often will not survive re-use.

How often are these valves failing? You down play the problem with the tundra engines but now are pushing this air injection valve problem. This is hilarious.

Within my local Toyota off-road club I've seen two 5th gens with this issue and two 2nd gen Tacomas that had the air pump go. The secondary air injection valves are exposed to hot exhaust gases, so they coke up and seize over time. In this regard they are similar to EGR valves in earlier vehicles, which are also typically troublesome.

 

Wow. A dozen or so failures out of millions of vehicles.

 

^You confuse this forum with the general customer base. There are only 49,000 users on 4Runners.Com, spread out over five generations of 4Runners. To have that many reports on this forum's 5th gen section in just the past two years is a lot.
