    Hello Wheel and Tire Experts
I recently purchased new Tires’s and Wheels at Discount Tire
And the installer advised me that a complete full turn it has a slight rub. They said it’s very minimal and won’t do any damage to the tire, mud flaps or inner wheel plastic. Is this correct or do I need to be concerned and fix it? I don’t do much off roading so I’m thinking it not a big deal. I have an alignment appointment next and wonder if this will or could throw it off the alignment after. No lift hand I went with Good year Ultratrain 265-70-17 tires and the wheels are 8.5 with a -6 offset.
    Thanks

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Welcome to the club. A lot of us have this problem, including me. I didn't even go up in tire size. An alignment won't fix your rubbing, it will only fix your truck from pulling to the left/right and help your tires wear evenly.

But they will be able to still do alignment?
I also thought if I ever need to use the spare will I have issues.I thinking no since I have the same tire size it’s fine. But again I’m a complete novice with this.

Sure, they will be able to align it.

Did you buy the same rim for your spare?
If not, how will it drive if you have to place it on …say your front left?

Thanks and no I didnt buy a spare. I thought since it was the same size tire as stock it would be fine. Usually a spare is only for an emergency where you only drive for a minimal amount/distance until you can get to a shop. Correct or should I be looking to get one as well and would this even fit under the car in the same spot the current spare is. thanks again

If I’m reading this chart right, I went with the same stock size tire just stock tires to Goodyear ultratrain and the wheels are an 8.5 so that’s fine but it being -6 this is why I have a slight rub. Since the rub is only at full turn and I hardly do a full turn. I’m assuming since it’s very minimal it’s fine. I could look into maybe taking off the mud flaps ( afraid of rocks kicking up, maybe I can trim some of them or try to see if I can trim the inner wheel plastic.
But also wondering if I need a different spare? Boy I did months and months of research and now I’m seconded guessing my purchase.

Your mileage may vary, But every time I have needed spare, it was not under my terms.
For the initial cost and fitment, It will be worth an investment to look into, over futures issues that may come into play.

Disclaimer: This is only after 45 Plus years of dealing with issues on the road.

Bonus points if you have a buddy with a flatbed when needed.

Your offset is causing it. Factory offset is +15 you are -6, that's about 3/4" wider. I would expect it to rub slightly at full lock. Plus your new wheel is 1" wider than factory. And I'm no expert, but I did stay at an AirBnb last night.

don’t beat yourself up over the purchase now that it’s rubbing. it could be worse you’re still good. I wasn’t expecting my setup to rub as much as it did either, on numerous occasions. I have 9” wheels

search this website for front wheel rubbing and you’ll find exactly what you need to trim.
don’t be that guy who says I never fully lock anyways so I’ll let it rub. full locks happen kind of often

    do these:
dremel trim a sliver off of lower inside edge of front bumper cover
the fender liner push back & re-fasten

just remove the little front mud guards all together :p

Thanks everyone I spent the morning cutting some of the wheel well and pushed it in. I also used a Dremal and cut some of the bumper. Also removed the front mud flaps. Will tell on my next drive

As for the spare will it still work in an emergency to get me to the shop to have a flat fixed. Or do I need to buy an another tire and wheel: again I changed the stock tires with same size tire just a Goodyear ultratrain and wheel is now an 8” -6.
Hopefully it’s fine don’t want to spend more money if it’s not needed.

If you’ve never changed a flat on your 4Runner, you might consider doing so in your driveway at home where it’s just a learning experience. You can see if it fits at the same time.

I’ve changed tires before just not the 4Runner. I’m learning towards seeing if I can return the wheels to discount tire. The tires are the same size so they will fit on the stock wheels. But since it’s beefier tire than stock I wonder if there could still be issues with using the OEM spare??

^I've run undersized spares on a couple of occasions (31" mixed with three 32"s, 32" mixed with three 35"s). No issues.

Toyota doesn't even install an identical spare as the road tires in some cases. You'll see more of this on 6th gen.

I would hazard a guess that 98.7% of the people with a 4Runner would call Roadside Assistance with a flat tire. 1.3% would change it themselves not worrying that their spare is on a different width rim (Like me). Or even a slightly different-sized tire. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you ever have a flat in your current configuration, your factory spare will work just fine. It's not like you will run it for weeks and months if you have a flat. Don't spend any more money on it, you're good! (Referencing your question in post #11)

Bro you are fine. Run the wheels, rub a little and dont think or over cut. Also, your spare will work just fine. Being on a different wheel isnt a problem. As long as the tires are both the same size, everything will be fine.
