I’ve been super minimal sleeping in the back of my 5th just rolling up a blanket to level out the uneven floor. Think it’s about time to get luxurious with a sleep system. The Luno systems look appealing. Anyone have any experience with them? Any other options similar to the Luno I should look at? Liking the Luno because it’s tax free from Oregon. Also do you think it’s still a good idea to level out the back with one of these systems or does the unevenness go unnoticed with one of these mattresses over it? Thanks in advance

I go super simple, but also very comfortable: Since my width is limited by a dog crate, I use a few of the cheap Thermarest closed cell foam pads, cut to length, to even out the back, and then I use an Exped Megamat as my mattress. It gives me about 90% the comfort level of my bed at home, and is super simple to set up. I'm 5'10", and an absolute must for me is removing the base portion of the rear seat. When it was just folded up my pad and my head did not have enough room. I briefly tried removing the entire 60% rear seat, even the backs, thinking it would give me more room, but in reality it just made leveling the sleeping pad more difficult. I also store my 10L gas and water jerry cans in the rear passenger floorspace, which perfectly fill out where the seat base would be (not shown in the photo).

As a side note; fitted "cot" sheets are a perfect fit for the Megamat.

I haven’t seen a Lumo mattress on a 4Runner but my daughter uses one in her Forester. It comes with a 12v pump and can be inflated in a couple of minutes. It’s well made and durable.

Just for reference the system I’m eyeing. This shows half the mattress. Also the leveling platform. Nicely made but $$$. It’s nice like a piece of origami and can be used with the seats up or down. Also not a hassle to take out. Was considering deleting the rear seats but too much of a commitment.

At first I thought the rear seat delete was a big commitment, until I started doing it. At this point I literally would not be able to count the number of times I've removed and reinstalled part or all of the rear seats. It's incredibly simple and about a 15-minute job.

I did remove the bottom sections of the backseats and leveled it with some Styrofoam insulation and then a sheet of plywood and some carpeting from Home Depot and I just lay an air mattress or I purchased some firm foam padding and lay it in there

I had a luno and it was excessively thick. I switched to an exped mat and its a bit easier to deal with. It packs smaller, inflates without a pump, and isn't as thick so more head room.

I use a cot for sleeping. I layer thin camping mattresses for cold insulation and padding. I have DIY screens for 2nd row windows, and a reflective DIY awning.
Tons of storage under cot. 2nd row 40% seat stays up for sitting, reading, changing clothes.
Since my runner is also daily driver transporting tools, family and even a toddler grandson I can easily put all the camping gear away in garage.

I bought the Lost Horizon mattress that fits the Tesla Model Y and it fits the 5th gen perfectly, provided you remove the rear seat bottoms. A lot more comfortable to me than the Luno, which I sold to a friend. Not compact when deflated, so it takes up more storage space than the Luno.

That's the first toilet I've seen in a 4Runner!

Jokes aside, that's a slick set-up. I would probably want a cot that is a tiny bit shorter, but it can be tough to find them with the right dimensions.

Interesting. The Tacoma 6' Truck Bed mattress fits both the 4th Gen and 5th Gens as well. Removing the seat bottoms is a must to maximize headroom and comfortability.

So unnecessary. You can make your own leveling planform and even get creative making it into a pull out table like i did. I use a thick Themorest base camp blow up mattress on my planform with memory foam on top. Super comfy.

It’s kinda ironic, sleep in tents and still do, pickup trucks, and the back of SUVs . 50 years ago IMG_1600.jpg
