Hey guys, I’ve been wanting to have my exhaust cut and have it re-routed to the side exit behind the mudflap. I don’t like the exhaust coming in the back window, nor the exhaust blowing on my leg or up my body.

I’m going to hopefully get in to the shop soon for it (maybe this week if he can schedule me in).

I’ve been searching and looking at pics for a few years and been wanting to do this mod. I’ve searched plenty of threads. Curious with those of you that have had it done, what is the best way you’ve seen? Exact location, route etc…

To me it looks like a pretty good place is just in front of the large bolt under the fender and exhaust tip angling back a few degrees instead of just coming out completely 90* almost against, or close to the mudflap.

I’ll probably just have the resonator cut off, have him 90* it out the side (angled back a little) and just have him use the factory tip.

Attached are a few pics that look pretty good to me for ideas.

@GreatWhitePig could you post a pic of yours as well and how you like the location? It looks good in the pic I can see of it.

Here’s the bolt I’m referring to for location reference, circled in red

All I get is this little box?!
Only other one I could find on my phone. Spoiler alert, smell still comes in the rear window when it’s open. Just FYI.

I used to run this one from Gibson, it was ok until I got into off-roading. Horrible for departure angle situations, it eventually got messed up and even the bumper melted some.
I say be careful with it.

I had mine diverted out to the right side and... GreatWhitePig is right. There is still some smell brought in through the rear window.
Maybe not as bad as originally, but it's still there.

I am looking at this too. You can borrow/rent exhaust pipe cutter. Like a short chain with cutting wheels-tighten around cut location and move its lever back & foth. Gives clean cut like plumbers tube cutter.
Buy a clamp on bent exhaust (JC Whitney & on line) tighten mounting screws and done. No welding needed. Look for stainless steel to insure longevity.

    Just a couple
You can shop for 5th gen as it fits the same... much easier to find exhaust for them then or 4th gen... the Gibson kit I ordered for both v6 and v8 4th gens and congress with the correct pipe section to make it work.

Any good exhaust shop can make whatever you want. I bought a Gibson but the clamps suck so it moved and rattled. I had a shop weld it up and install a V band clamp so I can break it apart if I need to.

Even if a side exit reduces exhaust fumes, dust and leaves still accumulate in the cargo area and on the back seats.

What are you actually gaining by moving the exhaust tip a few inches?

My reason for wanting it out the side VS. out the back is I don’t want the exhaust blowing on my leg while I’m loading/un loading the vehicle going on hunting trips.

The last thing I want is to smell like exhaust unnecessarily. If it helps reduce some coming in through the rear window the few times a year I have it open, then it’s a bonus.

Plus, I will be able to install my other rear recovery point that is currently right above the existing exit location.

Once the exhaust is out the side, I can access these 2 screws and get my other rear recovery point on as a bonus.

Here’s what the recovery point looks like for reference. I have the other installed on the drivers side

    very cool
I installed rear recoveries in 2025

I opted to chop pipe after it passes over axle (5th gen) instead of new side exit

I clamped the TRD exhaust pipe (cut to length) to the stock muffler. I get both quiet ride and the look of the TRD. I found just the TRD tail pipe on FB, cut to length, and used spray paint for high temperature. I clamped instead of welding so I can remove it if I had to replace the muffler.

    That’s smart, looks good.
Is that clamp holding the butt ends together, along with pipe hangar?

I was surprised how much relocating my exhaust reduced the window smell. But I chopped up high and angled down to the ground.. also allowed better access to rear passenger tire while idle.
Stopping the exhaust from blowing onto your legs/pants when loading cargo was satisfying.

*edit: is worth it for fancy dual rear recovery points. now I just need to get stuck.

OEM tail pipe is inserted into the TRD tail pipe before clamping together. OEM pipe is slightly smaller than the TRD pipe. I utilized the TRD hanger, I cut the TRD pipe before the hanger so it would look like it came that way.

    Just got it done today!

I had planned on him cutting off the resonator and using the stock tailpipe tip for the end. He just used 1 piece with about a 70* angle he bent and positioned it for me. I had hoped it would sit a little higher and closer to the fender, but it sits where it sits as it would have been past level.

Was going to just go with that but he mentioned he had some tips that would look good.

He’s a small local business that I’m happy to support so I bought the tip from him and he put it in. It came out a little farther out than I’d hoped but that’s as far back as we could get with the hangar already welded on and with the tip length.

Overall it turned out good and am happy with it. I’ll get my beefy recovery point installed now on the passenger side where the exhaust used to be and I’ll be all set!

I didn’t mention, but labor and parts was like $110-$115, and then I bought the tip from him. So overall very reasonable.

I did have to test out the rear window lol. Rolled the rear window down and gunned it. Definitely still getting sulfur in lol. Maybe not as bad as before, but bad enough to be unpleasant. That’s the first time I’ve had the window down driving in a few years. Maybe I’ll open it again next year as well?

The fellow doing the work was super cool. He let me in the shop and I spent quite a bit of my time looking at everything underneath while it was up in the air on the lift. Got to check out everything at full droop, scout out my driveline and grease Zerks that I am going to grease later today or tomorrow, and just be able to assess everything. That part alone was worth the price. I’d love to have a lift at the house and a flat driveway.

nice!! I found that if you dont have at least the front driver and pass windows down a little, it will pull in some fumes with just the hatch window down only.

From 2021…I’ve since removed the tip and painted it black. Didn’t care for the look so I never reinstalled it. If anyone wants it, pay shipping and it’s yours. (I’m 99% sure I still have it.)

Thanks, yeah I’d say I highly recommend. It’s the most minimum sulphur smell. My 4R has heaps of rear clearance. (hitch and recovery receiver in cargo area pelican case)
I dunno much about Tacomas. You talkin about factory exhaust or recovery points?

The exhaust, I think I remember seeing in a video that newest Tacoma exaust stops just after the rear axle pointing down.
