Should the new 4runner come with a hybrid version?

Hey guys, do you think it seems logical for Toyota to release a hybrid 4Runner? Maybe as a trim for the next year's model?

I think the next gen will have a hybrid.

    There's talk of a hybrid and/or turbo 4 banger.

The most reliable information so far is that the 6th Gen 4R options will be an I4 hybrid and a turbo I4.

I doubt it. The turbo 4 that's being talked about makes more torque at lower RPM's than the 1GR.

I'll also bet that a hybrid version will get way better than 22 MPG.

Our Rav4 prime has plenty of room, I doubt there is much difference space wise from the IC rav versus the Hybrid/plug in

Yes, the new highlander is a hybrid and there is tons of space. Even in my Prius I have a huge trunk, the battery is under my seat.

    Agreed.

Maybe it's because I've owned multiple V8 vehicles in the past, but having a 6 cylinder means nothing to me. I don't really care about the number of cylinders, a turbo 4 that makes good torque is fine. The turbo 5 cylinder in my Volvo is one of my favorite engines.

I understand more of the anti-hybrid or smaller engines when it comes to full sizes that have V8's. Eight cylinders are really nice, they have a great feel and a great sound.

To me the 1GR is the worst of both worlds, worse fuel economy than most eight cylinders, and less power than a lot of 4 cylinders.

We can make excuses for it because it's reliable, but literally every journalist that reviews a 4Runner always comments on the lack of power and gearing.

100% guaranteed there will be a hybrid version, whether we want it or not.

    TNGA-F Platform
    • 2023 Sequoia Hybrid (iForce MAX hybrid powertrain with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6)
    • 2023 Tundra Hybrid (iForce MAX hybrid powertrain with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6)
    and coming soon
    • 202x 4Runner will come in hybrid
    • 202x Tacoma will come in hybrid
    TNGA-K Platform
    • 2022 Rav4 Hybrid (2.5L 4-Cyl. ECVT)
    • 2022 Highlander Hybrid (2.5-L L4HV ECVT (AWD-e))
This is the natural progression towards an all EV lineup in the future, although Toyota seems like they might be the last company to go all EV.

With all the problems they are having with the new motors in the tundra they should probably sort that before they mess with other models... That being said, I expect they will do a Hybrid Runner before they are ready haha

You just said it. Reliability is the only reason we don't want a turbo 4. The 4.0 has shit milage and is slower than turd but the only reason we like it is because it's reliable

When/if they do a 4 cylinder turbo diesel, I'll be first in line.

    So, never then? ;)

You could move to Australia or Japan and get one, though.

A friend of mine from Tacomaworld has a Japanese 80 series with the turbo diesel. It's glorious!

Short answer to OP. ? Yes

EPA guidelines are a reality. So if they want to keep selling in the USA THEY WILL HAVE TO.

The sooner they get onboard the sooner they workout the technology.

I thought turbos create immense heat and heat kills engines. Does Toyota make a reliable turbo engine currently? I had a 2021 F-150 with the 3.5 turbos and my experience was awful, had to trade it in at 7K miles. I guess I'm just not convinced on turbos yet.

Turbos do create heat. But, some of the most reliable engines in the world are turbo diesels. So, it's not always a problem.

I think they have a bigger tendency to be problematic in performance cars. I'm curious how the 1.6 in the GR Corolla will hold up.

I haven't heard of many issues with the Lexus turbo 4 that's (allegedly) going in the 6th gen. There have been some problems with the 3.5 turbo Tundra, but I'm hoping they're just working out some bugs.

230K miles on my turbo 2.5L Volvo. Zero turbo related issues. It's a fantastic engine, and the turbo setup and tuning gives it great low end torque. It feels much more torguey than my 4Runner.

I think the idea that turbos are problematic is just more of an urban legend. Maybe years ago before computer controls they may have been problematic, or you hear about the tuner guys that crank the boost way up having issues. But on a modern stock turbo setup, it shouldn't be reliability issue.

Agreed! Some older turbo setups were just set up like crap from the get-go as well.

Good to hear some modern turbo engines have longevity, I hope whatever goes in the next gen runner is a proven one.

Great article. Toyota’s success with the Prius is why we didn’t think twice once we found the Rav4 plug in hybrid. It’s been great for the year we have had it. It’s got 9500 miles and I think we have put in 100 gallons of gas.

I hope so, I wouldn’t be upset with some better gas mileage and performance over what the current 4.0 provides. If only they can also make it as reliable.
