Should I Take a shot on this engine

I have 2002 4Runner Limited 4x4 looking to purchase a new engine. I am looking on feedback if I should move forward with this engine.

Donor Car: 1997 4Runner Limited 4x4.
Rollover car accident.
Transmission bell housing large cracks
No visible cracks in the Engine (cannot see all parts)
Engine will not turn over with hand crank.

I am removing the engine. My concerns on that it will not turnover (is it just tight because of compression because spark plugs are in or other reason, or is something internally wrong). How likely is engine to be cracked if Bell housing has major cracks in it, also the exhaust after the header but before the CATs broke off.

This engine is a good deal but it is hard to remove because of the accident (I will have cut it out). Are there anything I can do to find out test why it wont turnover before I remove it.

Unless the donor vehicle is a manual and is in gear, you should otherwise be able to turn the engine even with the plugs in. I am assuming that nothing is lodged against a belt/pulley.

I can hand crank my engine with plugs in when doing to timing belt swap.

 

Anything in that bell housing could be binding the motor from turning. It could also be a bad motor or had the crankshaft come off of the bearings. It better be one heck of a deal because of the potential issues that you could come across.

 

2001-02 is drive by wire so wiring and some parts will differ including the transmission side

I wouldn't bother buying an engine from an accident-vehicle, you could score one of those free if you look around

 

I rolled the dice with a reman from ATK/gearhead.( 5VZ) Not being a trusting soul, it will go on an engine stand and the pan pulled for some clearance checks before install. $3800.
