Don't get me wrong, I love my 2020 4runner, it's an off road with kdss, I paid 44k otd and it has 13k miles. I was offered 40,500 by carvana. I currently also have a paid off 04 trd tacoma.

The reason I would consider selling is to get out of debt (have 8k equity in the 4runner if I do sell). Is that a good price to sell it? Don't really want to deal with private party.

I just checked ours, depending on how the mods effect the price, we could make 3 to 4 grand off it. Bought it last year and drove it cross country and could sell it and walk away with 3k, definitely worth thinking about.

Mods definitely hurt the resell value, always take it back to stock if possible. The crazy thing is they only offered me 38k about a month ago

I’m in the same boat, just did a search and was offered 40903. I’m tempted to buy as I got it for 41 OTD and owned for a year already. Have a 99 sitting in my garage...

I actually did seriously consider it. The sole purpose of selling besides getting rid of debt is to buy a house within the next 2 years realistically and I probably need a truck bed for home improvement projects

Sell, buy nice 3rd gen and put supercharger, lift, wheels, tires and other mods...All for around 20k. But that's just my opinion.

One day...if I ever needed another vehicle besides my tacoma, I would definitely get a 3rd gen 4runner or 1st gen tundra

Have a '99 Limited and a '99 Taco, the 3.4 is relatively easy to work on. With these vehicles I can do pretty much everything for the farm. The Taco is my poor mans UTV. When I need some serious pulling power, I get out the '96 F-350 with the 7.3. I too like the 1st gen Tundra! Had a 2014 Tundra, terrible on mpg.

I'm no financial advisor, but reducing debt and buying a house (which is generally an appreciating investment and can have significant other economic advantages over renting) seems like an excellent reason to sell. Especially since you're not really eating depreciation. At the numbers you gave, you'd have spent about 3K for around a year and 13K miles of use. That's not bad at all.

Outstanding point, also, by selling your vehicle, you would greatly reduce your debt to income ratio and have more money for down payment and/or closing costs. Just a thought, not a financial planner, but have bought/sold several homes.

Also, if you plan on buying a home within the next two years, now is the time to get your finances in order. It can greatly impact your rate, try to get your credit score around 800+ and do not make any big purchases, open new credit cards, etc.

^ This. There was a thread on here the other day about Carmax paying crazy high prices for used cars. Not sure what happened to that thread.

If you're considering selling it, check around with Carmax and the other places like Carvana. See who wants it the most!

Honestly, I was going to wait until 2023 to replace my wife's Forester, but with the crazy high values on used cars, we decided to pull the trigger now.

For those looking to sell, take a look at Vroom, they are Carvana’s biggest competitor and I’ve sold them 6 cars over the past 6 years. I always check Carvana as well, but they’re always $1-2k more on the buy bid.

Look to sell yourself locally as well if you aren't in a rush. Dealerships in Oregon are asking way over MSRP for 4runners right now. I sold my 2021 Tacoma to CarMax for almost $3k more than I paid for it. CarMax offered what I paid for our 2021 4runner ORP the other day, which I'm tempted to take, but then I'd just have to buy another one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm thinking of selling mine for the same reason. I bought it in Feb 19, and paid it off this past November. I don't have any other debt, but I'm an apartment dweller, and part of paying off my debt and the 4R so quickly was to start saving for a house, though I'm WAY late to that game.

I could sell this for around 20K I think, and just put that in the bank. That's still really just a drop in the bucket with the crazy market these days, especially here in the northeast where stuff was already too expensive before the current madness hit. But, it would be nice to not have that money tied up in a (slowly) depreciating asset, and will instantly put me ahead over a year's worth of savings. Eventually I'll prob have to relocate to a more reasonable market where I can actually afford something.

Also, quite frankly owning something 8 years old that's still worth actual money makes me feel kind of uncomfortable. This is the first time I've owned a car that's still worth something after I've paid it off, haha.

I have a beater car, an 07 XC70, so I don't even really need to replace the 4R. I recently started DD'ing the XC again to keep miles off the 4R, and even at 226k miles I find it much nicer to drive than the 4R anyway. Plus, driving a car that you no longer worry about scratches and dings is very liberating, haha. That's one of the reasons I'm a little gun shy to take the 4R offroading, I don't relish the thought of scratching and denting it up offroad. I think I'd have way more fun in a 3k beater, haha.

On the other hand, it's only got 115k on it, so I know I'd easily get another ten years of relatively trouble free driving out of the 4R, more if I get out of the northeast before it turns into a rusty POS. And it looks SO good! Whenever I look at it I think, "Damn, that's a good looking vehicle!"

It definitely is nuts. Im about to buy a 4Runner at MSRP, but I'm getting more than I paid for my 2 year old Tacoma with 20k miles OTD. So, go from a TRD OR Taco to a SR5 4Runner for like 1k total cost lol. <knock on wood this deal goes through>

Here in southeast Texas the housing market is a complete shitshow. I’ve lived in this area all my life and I’ve never seen a sellers market like this. Houses under about $300K are being shown for three days, offers taken for three more and it’s not uncommon for the sale to be $30K to $50K over asking price. Absolutely nuts.

And just a comment about a house being an investment. While they are an asset, I would never consider a home an investment long term. Property taxes, insurance and maintenance and repair will eat away at any profit one might get, particularly if you’re like us, love where you are and stay a while. This is our 28th year in this house and any cash we would walk away with at closing, even in today’s insane housing market, has been seriously watered down by expenses. Don’t misunderstand though. Definitely buy a house, become a part of the community, settle your family in a stable environment and enjoy life. I can’t tell you how glad I am that my kids had all of the above growing up, as I did. Just don’t be a victim of the mindset that your house is your biggest investment. I have seen friends fail to manage their money and have real investments, choosing to treat their home as some sort of golden egg to be cashed in later. That’s generally not a wise investment strategy. Oh, and 15 year mortgage. Do the math.

As for selling my Runner, nope. Fixin to turn 7k miles on it and still in the honeymoon phase. Headed to the beach in about 4 hours for a week of chill.

Bought my 2020 4Runner and didnt look back. I moved to the PNW and needed a SUV or truck as ive always owned either 2 door or 4 door cars. Ended up selling my older 2009 civic to help out with debt and funds. I would just keep the 4Runner since they dont really depreciate too low

Very similar situation here. 3 years into my Tacoma lease, I managed to get $1000 off MSRP on a TRD ORP 4Runner and I am getting over $10K in cash after trading the Tacoma. My truck is really low klicks which helps.

Just waiting for the 4Runner to be built and shipped now lol.

I could get top dollar and walk away from my Pro basically with no money lost, but then what? The supply of new cars is really low and I love my 4R. Driving a Subaru just doesn't inspire me.

We just drove the Subaru lot yesterday. The only car my wife was really interested in was the WRX, but I’m like the only reason to get out of the 4Runner is for some better fuel economy and the WRX really doesn’t do that. I think neither of us really want to get rid of it, but keeping it, leaves us with two vehicles that get under 20 mpg, and that’s a little had to swallow with rising fuel prices.
