I thought I'd share my shifter upgrade. I replaced the poor quality boot for the transfer case shifter with a nice red stitched one from Amazon. For some reason, the OEM t-case boot reminds me of foam packing sheets. After I replaced that boot, I decided to order another one and add a boot to the trans shifter as well. I replaced the silver knob with a black one. I am happy with the way it turned out. Now I need to order the black t-case knob to complete the look.

If anyone is interested, this is the boot that I used. I just removed the silver piece.

Looks good! How did you tuck it all in the shift gate?

When you have $160 burning a hole in your pocket, upgrade again. Proper tank-like match.

Thanks. I personally think it makes the interior look a little more modern. I removed the console top cover, folded one side of the boot, and then used a strip of 3M double-sided tape to stick it next to the PRND letters. The top, bottom, and right side are secured with 3M tape as well, but they are attached to the shifter bezel under the console cover. Once the cover was snapped back into place, the boot is nice and tight. The T-case boot was super easy. The old boot was secured to a plastic frame with staples. I removed the staples and then attached the new boot and snapped the frame back into place on the bottom side of the console cover.

I like that combo, but I couldn't justify spending that much on shifters at the moment. I just got a cheap OEM-style one for now. Since I'm getting a level (Bilsteins), wheels, and tires next month, I figured I should limit my spending on upgrades at the moment. The wife already doesn't understand why I need to spend money for upgrades on a brand new vehicle. :D

When you say remove the console top cover, do you mean the entire center console or just the area around the shifter?

The entire console top piece. The bezel around the shifter (the part with PRND) is what I double-sided tapped the boot to. Since the shifter bezel sits under the main console piece, the boot stays tucked in very well. I had a co-worker tell me today that they would have never known it didn't come that way from the factory. If you don't care about leaving the gear indicator letters exposed, you could tuck the boot in at all 4 sides around the bezel. But I think the way I did it works very well too.

*I'd be happy to pop the console off and take pictures of the underside around the shifter if you would like.

I would appreciate that pic, if you're still in the mood to do it...

how did you get the transfer shift knob off? my shifter just twists right off, but transfer case knob seems locked in place.

how did you attach the new transfer case boot? I was thinking of using safety wire in same places as the staples were

The transfer case knob unscrews with a fair amount of resistance, but you don't need ape-like strength.

You don't need to remove the cap if you're unscrewing, but take care not to go too far when screwing back on.

Hey man. I have added a few more pics. I just removed the staples and the old T lever boot from the frame and then just wedged the new boot between the frame and the console top. It clips back in and holds the boot in place. It has worked very well.

    thank you for the pics,
I like that shifter boot added to the transmission
I bought one to change out my transfer case shifter, but never thought about adding one for the trans...

Im having katzkin seats made now, in grey leather with red stitching...
I got a grey shift boot with red baseball stitching, and had grey leather knobs, also with red baseball stitching made...

hope to fit this weekend, and gonna check to see how the transfer boot I got will fit over the transmission lever

    I got mine here

Well, I got my transfer case shifter upgraded...
still thinking about a matching boot for the transmission...

I got the leather boot made here,
    https://www.redlinegoods.com/

I found redline on another thread, but OP rage deleted it all so posting on this shifter upgrade thread rather than a new one

One can chose color of leather, or more than one color, color and style of stitching..
One color and regular stitching is $49
I got light grey with red baseball stitching and it was $75 for the boot
I found a guy on Etsy in Lithuania to make the dove grey shift knobs with red baseball stitches...
I'm getting Katzkin leather seats, black bases, with dove grey faces with red stitching and TRD PRO in red on all four backrests...

The dove grey matches the headliner very well...
I think the interior will tie together nicely...and be unique

    before and after...

I did something similar as well but did not like how it looked with my FJ Cruiser knob so I removed it.
