So, I've been riding around on a 1" thick sheepskin vest for over a week now, and I love the thing. After reading what little I could find from people who've had sheepskin, I bought it to test out all the claims of comfort in any temperature... and they weren't wrong! It really does feel awesome to just hop into my 4x4 sauna and not sweat a drop, even if I never turn the A/C on. I tested this on a 400 mile trip in West Texas, on a 90*f+ day. However, my little $75 "vest" only benefits me, and does that only in the middle strip of the seat. I need to upgrade all of the seats to full coverage!

Who has the lowdown on sheepskin or maybe even another type of pelt? For whatever reason, web searches bring back nothing but the same three "articles" and a whole lotta ads. I've considered beaver but I have no idea how it would perform on hot days. Sheared 1" sheepskin still seems like it would be best for hot days. Am I wrong?
Also, should I go with pelts, tailored, or somewhere in between? I have a 5 seater 2018 TRD ORP and I like being able to fold my seats down on occasion. If I could get pelts that looked awesome, didn't cost too much for covering all the seats, were high quality and of course did the job I'd probably go that route. The custom ones look nice enough, but with pelts I imagine folding seats and taking it in for service would be easier. Besides, *if* the long hair sheepskins or other furs are just as good as the sheared sheep for heat and comfort, I could possibly find some amazing colors and patterns, right? Wrong? Help set me right! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Is the advantage of buying sheep skin cover's to keep your seat cooler in the heat?

Yes, and to provide a "floaty" cushion that has almost no pressure on the body, while also keeping your body planted snug and firm. It deifies logic to describe, but I float on mine and though it bounces and sways ever so slightly, I don't slide or feel unstable while turning or changing lanes quickly.
The cooling factor is awesome, though! I still feel the heat in the cab, but unless my legs or shoulders touch the softex the heat doesn't affect me, it's like a pleasant ambient warmth versus sweating and squirming all over. I no longer dread running errands, I can't recommend them enough.

    UPDATE:
I'm currently rolling on just two in the front, but I test fit the two pelts and my previous "vest" to the bench in a way that allows me to quickly get them out of the way to fold up the seats (or pick up drunk people).
They feel amazing, and look much better in person than on screen but bear in mind these pelts are just naturally shaped sheepskins, with no straps or fasteners whatsoever. The black vest in the center fits the bucket seats beautifully, but was hastily rigged for the test.
I am pleased to report that both the short and shaggy sheepskin types feel amazing in all temperatures.

And yes, I apologize for the crappy pics, and the dirty interior. I've been hauling people around a lot lately.

Yep, Australian sheepskin, gray w/ black tips. They even have other sizes, styles, colors, wool types- tons of stuff to check out, and that's just from one seller!

    Figured I would update this...

So, I still have and use the pelts, but more so for sleeping on than as seat cushions. I decided to buy two more "vest" type covers in grey, and those have stayed on the front seats where they have been great for almost 20k miles.
My original black vest is now in the garage, where everyone including feral cats gets to enjoy it.

I liked the seat covers so much, that I bought a sheepskin coat for my mother, sisters, and myself (which came from Overland Sheepskin of course lol).
    Get some, and love 'em!

WOW that looks like a beautiful winter coat...

And may I ask since I didn't read thru this whole thread.

Why sheep skin seat covers, other than comfort?

Thanks! I didn't expect it to be quite so fancy when I saw it online, but it has grown on me!

I guess the biggest reason I started using them was to make my Softex seats bearable in the Texas summer. They do work beautifully- cool in the summer, warm in the winter, easily brushed out and feels better on the skin than silk sheets, and are naturally self-freshening. Of course, they also look pretty cool if barbarian chic is your thing :)

Hey Snickel Fritz, speaking for the animals that can’t speak for themselves, I’d respectfully urge you to consider and try some non animal solutions for your human comforts.

Despite my enthusiasm for sheepskin, I don't endorse or engage in animal cruelty. I eat far less meat than the average person, and I don't buy furs or leather that was "intentional"- the sheepskin products I bought were very expensive (aside from the "vests" and wheel cover, I can't confirm those) because they were made from Merino sheep. Merino sheep are kept alive and comfortable for as long as possible, to harvest wool. When they die of a mishap, predation on the range, or disease they are harvested for their skins (but not the meat as I understand it).
These are not mutton sheep, nor are they mink.

My friend raises sheep specifically to harvest them for meat for his family. He rarely buys store meat. He then sends the skins off to some Amish folk and they do their thing. Sheep skins make great motorcycle seat covers.

That's the way to do it, raising your own gives you the peace of mind that you can't get from store bought. My girlfriend's family has about a hundred head of black Angus, all of which are spoiled by the farmhand. He pets them, coos to them, plays music for them, and loses a lot of sleep to chase off the coyotes. He's over 80, and he doesn't kill anything- not even the brown recluse that bit him a few years ago.
Anyhow, this Zen Vaquero feeds them, loves them, and after they're sold they end up going to smaller processors, where I was told the standards are extremely high for clean kills. Basically, they have about as good of a life as cows can hope for, and the people who end up eating them have the benefit of clean, organically raised cattle at a lower cost than the regular store bought meat. I also live about a mile from a "big" meat processor, that place is horrendous. There are horribly unhealthy cattle all around that neighborhood, scattered among the feedlots squeezed in between other businesses and the junkyard. When they are in production, the stink covers the entire neighborhood for hours. They hire "unhirables" almost exclusively to save money, and those dirtbags like to joke about the evil shit they do to the animals on the kill floor. They also drive around the neighborhood with coolers loaded up with "steaks" that weren't fit for consumption. Having a sex offender walk into your open garage and try to sell you tainted meat is just another of the charming surprises that come with a local meat processor. Who knew, right?

I used to be against using animal products, btw- but the alternatives in most cases are made of plastics.
Plastic sucks. It doesn't last, it pollutes, it off-gasses, and isn't comfortable.
I started trying more natural materials for my wardrobe, and I won't go back to plastic. I have silk, wool, cotton and hemp- all of which hold up better in the wash, require less soap, and get super clean even if I use just a teaspoon of Dr. Bronner's to a load. I also don't have smelly feet anymore, even after having boots on all day.

Yeah, I'm pretty much sold on natural products now whenever I can get them. Better performance, longer lasting, easier to care for (usually) and far less damage to the planet than the synthetic alternatives.

I fully support small farms, homesteads, and responsible ranching. I also fully support those who are against using animal products, provided that they are able to acknowledge it isn't a viable option for the vast majority of humans, and that synthetic alternatives are far more damaging and cruel to all life on this planet.
    ;)
