Is this system prone to fail for people that keep their 4Rs a long time? I’m not concerned with the foam filter as that is simple to inspect/replace. I’m talking about the 2 switching valve assemblies on the driver and passenger side? I have seen bypass kits for older non-Gen 5 4Rs, but not Gen 5. I have also seen videos for older 4R valve replacements making me think they don’t fail until fairly old. As part of the Emissions control system, what is the warranty on this system? Is it 3-36, 5-60 or longer? Thanks

Emissions warranty varies like how my safety belt warranty is longer for a vehicle sold in Kansas. I think mine is 80k, 8 years?

As for prone, I do not think we've seen any trend.

Doubt it. But why mess with it or even try to bypass it? I think most folks have to take this out when they are doing spark plugs as they seem to be on the way.

They tend to fail around the 10-year mark based on reports from 5th gens in my local Toyota off-road club. (The similar system in 2012-2015 Tacomas tends to fail sooner.) The switching valves are exposed to hot exhaust gases, so they're inherently prone to coking up. $500 Hewitt bypass kit is available, works 90% of the time.

Warranty on the system is 3/36. (According to the maintenance booklet, only the cats, PCM, and OBD2 connector are warranted for 8/80).

I swapped out the foam filter in case that was the issue. I figure if it fails I will deal with it when the issue comes up.

Sounds like that would also clean up the appearance of the engine bay. If anyone has done this a picture would be appreciated.
